Is this color unique to the Prowler or is it used on other Chrysler cars?

At the CAAP tour a few weeks ago, they said it was unique to the Prowler but very close to a color used on other models.

Unique is all relative ... what may be considered unique to a certain model today is replicated on other models once it is deemed popular by the masses ... and will look good on the other vehicle. Look at the past and you will see the future.

Wayne Finch bought a top for the new Deep Red and it did not match. They had used the other Chrysler red that looked similar. It did look similar but was NOT a match.

I have had conflicting stories and I am still unsure of the correct answer. We were told at CAAP that it was unique to Prowler but I was also told that the color is the same but the paint process is different to give it a darker, deeper and more metallic finish. Still not sure who to believe. Someone please set the record straight. Paint code on Prowler is PRL. Anyone have a dark red minivan with the same code?

I have placed a call into MSX to talk with there paint department directly to confirm the color and process. All of our paint books call it the same color as on the Dodge Caravan. I did paint Wayne's hardtop as the paint formula calls for and it was close but not exact. I have the parts back here at Metalcrafters to repaint. If the paint code is the same but the process is different, that could be a challenge for anyone and may have to be matched to each individual vehicle since these are painted by hand and not by a computer controlled robot? I'll let everyone know as soon as I speak to the guys at MSX.

I posted this before after spending an afternoon on this with the dealer. I was thinking of getting a different trailer and wanted them to paint it Candy Red like the car.

They told me it was special order from DC or PPG and there was no paint code for it. I have no reason not to believe them. I was also told it is very expensive.
In Toledo by Jeep there is a PPG dealer and he said the same.

Oh yeah ... and I believe EVERYTHING that dealer's have told so many people that have posted to this board "V8's are coming, Prowler built until '05, special top secret limited editions with this and that" and the list goes on ... dealers, they are such a knowlegable and trusting bunch.

Only paint that is VERY expensive is the chameleon paint that changes color, oh and one color from Ford that was rumored to have actual gold flecks in it. Besides that, EVERY paint from a manufacturer has a paint code of one sort or another -- just a plain automotive FACT.

Passing along constructive and corrective information ....

THEIR IS I MEAN ARE SOME PAINTS THAT ARE VERY COSTLY, BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL BY LOOKING AT IT. BUT YOUR STANDARD CAR IS MOST LIKELY NOTTTTT!!!!!!!. YOU KNOW THAT THEY WILL SAY WHAT EVER TO SELL THE LAST ONES. AND YOU KNOW THAT THE FACTORY WOULD HAVE A SEPERATE PRICE LINE ON THE STICKER IF IT WAS.

I have been in contact with the supplier quality manager, Mr. Paul Lekity, at MSX and it is correct in saying that the Candy Red "is" a paint color solely for the Prowler line. The paint code that I used to paint Wayne Finch's parts is the correct code. MSX uses a different brand of paint, we use PPG at Metalcrafters, plus we just needed to put one more coat, (layer) of tinted clear to make the color match. The paint is a 3-stage paint process:

1. base coat.
2. tint coat or tinted clear coat.
3. clear coat.

Depending on how many tint coats that are applied, will depend on how dark the color will be. Paul Lekity has been very helpful in working with me to rectify this problem and the concerns from everyone. We are repainting Wayne's parts early next week and will have the color match correct.

The correct paint code from Paul Lekity is ZRL, although when we pull up the code PRL in our PPG database, it show as 2002 Prowler Candy Red also.

It is a Prowler only color and we have found that the PPG formula does not appear to have the same size flake in it. It looks like a good match until you put it in the sun and then it isn't even close. I checked it first on an overcast day and it looked OK. We are using a Glasurit formula that really looks right on and it is a base/clear formula.

...this should be fun trying to match the Candy Red color in the years to come. Has anyone thought of making it simple (i.e manufacturer is X, 1st coat is Y, second coat is Z, and then clear coat). Am I missing something?

oh yes, and if the paint code is ZRL, why is it printed on the door PRL (which according to Glasurit is Corton Red from the early 90's).
