Just put in the 3.5" infinity rear speakers (I already replaced the door and front dash speakers a couple of years ago).

Sounds great!

As I searched and read through here about folks talking about replacing the speakers...the one common thing was: Nobody could find a replacement for the 6.5" dual voice coil woofer.

So I started searching. Couldn't find one either.

But then I had an idea. Bazooka makes a 6.5" tube sub woofer http://www.electronicexpress.com/product?brand=309&prod_id=12994

I'm thinking I could just buy that, and then take the actual 6.5" speaker out of the tube and mount it in place of the OEM speaker.

Any thoughts?

I just replaced my rear sub and found that infinity makes a 6.5 component set that is dual voice coil and 2 ohm like the factory. Ordered mine off ebay 120 bucks.

Jcars05,

What was the specific model# of the speaker you bought? How did it sound compared to the stock subwoofer speaker? Did it fit without any problems?

I just went through all the speakers listed on the Infinity website http://www.infinitysystems.com/car/
I couldn't find any 6.5 inch dual voice coil speakers there at all.

I tried all what you all are speaking of the bazookas etc. I wish I know how to post photos on the site ( 4 years and never caught the hang. I went with a custom single 13 inch JBL. and it sounds wonderful. No rattle in the trunk and compliments the sound ( same speaker set up ) well. And when I raise the trunk up it looks wonderful ( custom look ) Just wanted to advise there are other options and I spent/waste all that money and I am very happy with it.

I looked at all the kicker speakers, and the infinity 6.5's as well. None of them are 6.5" woofers with dual voice coil.

So far other than my bazooka tube raw speaker idea...the only dual voice coil speakers I have found are ceiling speakers for the home. And those are pretty much full range speakers, not subs.

Good find!
But it looks like it won't fit.
It needs to be a shallow mount. But at least you found one! That's better than I could do.

Also those Goldwood brand speakers appear to me to be some real cheap speaker. Not sure how it would sound if it fit. It also doesn't appear to handle much power.

Kudos for finding one though

i know this thread has simmered off... any updates to the Sub replacments? i am in the market to replace mine.. i would like to keep the original OEM box and just replace the 6.5 woofer.
what is the reason for needing dual voice coil? is that only needed if you are keeping the original Amp that is bridging 2 channles into 1 for the sub?
i am already in the process of replacing my Amp, thinking a 5 channel so i can have one channle for the Sub.

thoughts?

just ran across this Kicker http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11395_Kicker+CompVT+08CVT652.html
6 1/2 Shalow mount
it is 2-ohm but, it is single not dual.
if i am replacing with a Single vioce coil and not bridging, wouldn't i need a 4 ohm?

Kicker does make a 4 ohm..http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11396_Kicker+CompVT+08CVT654.html

I plan to remove the stock amp and install an ALPINE PDX-5 channel amp..I already have a Pioneer DEH9600P Head unit and CD changer and Sirius Satellite radio..the front six speakers have been changed..I'm thinking just one of the Kickers to replace the sub...any thoughts?

I've been down this road a couple times. Don't know if these will work with the stock amp due to the dual coil on the stock sub, but here are some options.

Bazooka NOS6 sub

Kicker sub behind seat and replace stock sub with an Earthquake. Note: The kicker will not fit in the stock enclosure.. The Earthquake is the only model that I found with the correct depth.

Binster,

So that is how you do it, you simply use NO2 to "Boost" the speaker's performance.

I would have never thought of that on my own. Thanks for the idea

I am dumbfounded! What is all this hype about speakers, when the best sound comes from the Prowler tail pipes. LOL

I just finished installing a Pioneer TS-SWX251 10 inch shallow mount sub in the trunk running off a dedicated amp I mounted right above the existing factory amp. I built some seat risers, and lifted the passenger seat about 1 1/2 inches (now the seats are the same height!) This provides plenty of space to mount the amp. This Pioneer sub fits perfectly in the trunk right between the hinges. There is nothing you need to modify.

It sounds great, and for a 10" sub it can vibrate the hell out of the car! I had to dynamat my license plate since it was vibrating so badly. Hopefully this photo will load. I purchased the sub online at Sonic Electronix.com for $129 (Crutchfield wants $179).

I actually kept the existing sub hooked up as well. The combined bass is very good, but I need to work on eliminating the rattles from the stock speaker cover.

I highly recommend this sub.
