I smell gasoline most of the time I back the Prowler out of the garage now - no liquid gasoline on the floor, but the smell is strong and getting stronger. It persists for a mile or so after I start driving. The smell is most pungent behind the car seats in the "trunk" area. I already took it to the Chrysler dealer here for this issue, and they had no clue. How do I assess the gasket on the top of the fuel tank, as these gentlemen did so long ago (see older post below)? Other ideas?

Any check engine lights? If so what’s the code? Pull the access panel under the carpet for the fuel pump. If it’s wet in any way shape or form around the ring the O rings the issue.

The rubber plug is for the transmission dip stick. It’s a square panel with 8mm nuts. I had an intermittent gas smell before I did this

Probably the o ring is leaking if the tank is really full. I had the same problem on a friends car. he had filled the tank a few miles from my house and it sat in my garage for an hour and there was gas on the floor. we took it to the dealer and by the time we got there the wet around the tank unit retainer was dry and they did nothing, we picked up the car and it never did it again.

There are no check engine lights, and the car runs great as it usually does - one of my most reliable vehicles! Also, I do not tend to overfill, but its happened and I have caused the gas to push back into...somewhere. Using ethanol-free gasoline really helps prevent early gas-pump shut-offs I've discovered. I will take a look under the carpet tomorrow, thank you for the info. BTW, why does a Prowler have an 8 mm anything?

How’d you make out? There’s metric hardware throughout these cars. I hope you found the issue and were able to fix it.

Update: I waited until the vehicle showed a code, P____—, which indicated leaks in the vent lines from the gas tank. A mechanic at the Chrysler dealership will patch and splice those. No issues with the fuel pump gasket were discovered. I'll update this thread based upon the results of that effort.
