Hey Prowlers,

My 2002 silvercat has only 8000 miles but now is having intermittent drops in my oil pressure guage. While driving it will falls to "zero"; then minutes later return to normal....scary!

Anyone experience a similar problem?
Suggestions as how to repair?

PS - there is plenty of oil in it

Check the guage but be very careful tightening the fitting. You can actually damage the block. It should be tighened to about 200 INCH POUNDS or 16 foot pounds. I have one that fluxuates from mid point to next to highest point continually, up and down, drives me crazy. Put a test unit on and it is perfectly steady, once warmed up. Think there is some air in the line to the guage mount piece.

Tom Randall had this problem. Replaced the oil sending unit.

If you recently had your oil changed, they hit the sending unit and probably knocked it loose (which is located next to the filter). Takes about 10 minutes to change it out - just pick one up from the dealer. T

Something similar happened to me. I was cruising around one day when I noticed that the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero (actually saw it drop) Thinking that I just coated the highway with oil James Bond style, I immediately went from the hammer lane to the inside lane in order to safely pull onto the shoulder & turn her off so I wouldn't seize the engine. When I did this, the sudden movement caused the oil gauge to jump back up to the normal parameters.

I immediately took her into my Prowler Tech & he found that it was an oil sensor Part Number: 1-04707015
The sensor was failing because oil was leaking through it, basically causing it to short out. This may be the same part the Tami & idive stated, because this is also located next to the oil filter. Mopar Part bag calls it a sensor. You might have also noticed a single drop of oil on the floor in your garage every few months. You might have even wiped it when you changed your oil, thinking that you spilled a little when you took off the filter.

Good luck, keep us posted.

The Tech at Apple Dodge said it gets some moisture inside the plastic housing and cuts off. They are having problems with this design on other models. The replacement will eventually do the same thing. When it dries out, it goes back to working. They claim humidity around here is killing these things. I don't know if he was right, but it makes sense. Mine works most of the time!
