Hello everyone,

This is what happened to me. Driving on the highway, speed gauge goes zero and transmission goes to first gear. I threw it in neutral and rolled onto the off-ramp in neutral. While rolling, the engine died (lost battery power completely)

Changed battery and noticed that the main chassis harness is shorted.

New battery works but the transmission only goes into one gear forward, N and reverse.

Is there a way to flash the transmission controller, perhaps needs new sensors, etc? Anybody have any suggestions? THANKS ! !!

Stuck in first gear, or second gear?

Might try transmission senors, Input and/or Output

A search of site will provide many answers to this condition, if it is the tranny sensors

Good luck

I agree. That's a $40 fix. i wouldn't try to flash the computer. Just my opinion,I could be wrong,I have been before. Good luck. If that doesn't work get back on here and give an update, these guys give great advice. Good luck again.

Changing the transmission sensors Is low cost and easy. If the speedo is out, it's likely the output sensor but it's cheap to change both. You can use a 1" deep socket on them.

Sounds like something else might have been going on there though.

noticed that the main chassis harness is shorted. You state you found shorted out wires? These will require repair before going any further...Try to post some photos of the harness your talking about. Dead shorts are not good and if not fused can melt a vehicle to the ground with a thermal event.....

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm on eBay now buying the sensors.

Let me correct my previous statement. The Batt + cables shorted to the chassis but only for a short amount of time so there was no complete cable burn. The dead short probably damaged a few things but I will only be able to tell after tomorrow when I get to the car (we moved it to a garage).

As far as the transmission is concerned, it is not stuck in gear. It goes into P, R, N and D however it will not shift into higher gear when I accelerate. When this whole thing happened, the speed gauge went to zero but now it is working. Like I said I'm buying sensors now for step one. I'll keep it posted.

You could have bought the tranny sensors at your nearest local NAPA auto parts store, and probably paid less $$$.

Yes, sounds like tranny is in LIMP MODE. When put in gear will go no higher than 2nd gear....
-----------------------------------------------------------

If your tranny goes into limp mode,,,,engine light comes on but the speedo still works - failure of input tranny sensor

If your tranny goes into limp mode,,,, engine light comes on and the speedo doesn't work - failure of the output tranny sensor

Did the short occur where the hot lead goes under the radiator support?? Or some place else?

What lights are on the PRNDL ? Are there boxes around each letter?

Check the fuses & relays for the transmission. All marked as EATX or Transmission Control. Relay and fuse in Main Power box and a couple of fuses in the driver side dash fuse box.
