Does anyone have any recommendations on where to take a prowler in the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area for routine maintenance and the dredged gauges not work issue?

I am not a huge fan of dealership service but will go there if that is the best option.

Nick. I just use the local Chrysler Dealership for routine maintenance. I have had good luck over the years.

What are your gauges doing/not doing?

All gauges but tach and voltage stop working and air bag light turns on. When the car sits for a while (usually overnight) all gauges work again on start. I go for a drive and the gauges work fine until I stop and turn the engine off. When I turn the car back on the gauges dont work again. If I leave the car in on position (without engine running) the gauges never stop working (but I cant just leave keys in the car on all the time). The only other issue I have with car is the low tire pressure light is on because tpms have never been replaced. The low pressure light goes off when the gauges stop working and it is only the air bag light.

I recently replaced the battery and it did not do anything. Based on threads here I this it is either 1) bad pcm 2) grounding issue 3) short in instrument cluster

Thanks Tony. How did you determine bad capacitor? Pull the instruments and just look?

My gauges weren't working a while back. The dealer put it on their diagnostic machine and all the could say was the cluster was bad. Apparently they have no way of diagnosing the cluster itself. So I removed the cluster, opened it up and looked at it and a capacitor had leaked and failed. Replaced that capacitor and all is well.

All,

I took off the instrument cluster and it looks like I have a bad capacitor (see just to the right of D52. R79 may be bad too). Any ideas where I would be able to get new capacitors? Also if anyone that has done this can help a non-circuit board type guy with some directions that would be appreciated. I am a geotechnical[soil] engineer. I guess i should have been an electrical...

Hi - I just happened to find a local guy that repaired old car tube radios. He knew nothing about new chips etc … but knew capacitors - he replaced mine with a "larger capacity" very common capacitor. He had lots of them in his shop.

5 minute job...

He couldn't test the circuit board.

PS - I did the self test on the cluster first and nothing worked. After new capacitor - self test showed everything working including the "PRNDL" and odometer test.

To do self test - push trip reset button while turning key from lock position to unlock. ( not to run )

The cap on both of mine were spot C9 . In your pic it looks like the cap may have leaked on the R89 resistor as it is all black.
Mine was replaced with 68uF 50V 105degC capacitor.

A speedometer shop may be able to fix that.

Thanks all. I called the company at the link below and talked to him for a while. He said he has fixed multiple prowlers with this issue and it should be a quick job. He anticipated that he would have it fixed and mailed out within 24 to 48 hours of receiving it. Price is $195 + shipping rather than $350 + shipping at the prowler store.

I will keep you posted. I may wait until the end of this month until the weather typically turns worse and get some last driving without gauges...

Sent the cluster to the ebay link. It arrived on Wednesday and was fixed and sent back the same day with an email including the tracking number. I sent an email back to them to ask what the issue was and they said the power supply was malfunctioning and needed to get rebuilt.

Supposed to get it Wednesday. I will reinstall and keep the fingers crossed that we have the problem solved. I will update. The total price for the service was $200 plus $60 shipping each way because going from Washington state to New Jersey.

Received the cluster today and re-installed. Put it threw the motions that usually make it stop working and everything is good. Hoping we have solved the problem. At this point I would recommend these guys if anyone is having similar issues. The only thing that happened is the plastic outer piece was broken when I opened the box and I needed to super glue. The packaging itself seems well packaged so I think it is like a function of fedex.
