Well I'm tired of getting knocked in the head. What is the part number and price for the gas struts used to hold the hood up? Bruce H - can you help me with these? Thanks! ------------------ |

If your car is one of the originals, w/ the hood-prop, & you would like to shift to the gas shocks on each side - Tom Mills sells a kit that includes both shocks & associated attaching hardware. But, keep in mind that you will have to alter your firewall by cutting a little off it, for clearance needs of the shocks when the hood is closed. I just double checked his website, and the kit is not listed - so you should call him will produce on for you. You can find his website on the home page for this site. I'd like to add the hood prop instead of the gas shocks. I know there has been some discussion about this but has anyone found the original hood prop to install on later Kats? Gordon |

Gordon / You can do a search for this topic to find what others have done. I have a very early '99, which had the hood prop. The radiator cover plate has a hole in it, that the hood prop gets inserted into, when the hood is up. The newer Kats do not have this hole. Also, the hood shocks limit the opening of the hood. This prevents you from just using the original stock prop. I have acquired a 2nd radiator cover plate & will have it either polished or chromed during the coarse of the summer. I also plan on getting another hood prop & doing the same to it (chrome), like some others have done. I will experiment w/ the length of the original prop, to see if there is a way of cutting it to allow for the installation to the newer Kats. I try to keep the POA posted. |

My '01 Mulholland with 4500 miles is suffering from hood shock failure. Would be very interested in using a rod and trashing the shocks. Bill |

Thanks for the info. I can see the problem. Perhaps the home grown variety of hood prop is going to be the fastest solution. I do have an extra set of shocks to put on; I just don't trust them after a bob on the head. Gordon |

I thought the posts about the hood struts going bad was just an isolated couple of incidents & wouldn't happen to my Kat, until..... Saturday, I had detailed my Prowler and was putting on the bra. I was putting the bottom clips on the left side and had my right hand on the top of the side panel when the struts gave away and the hood slammed down on my hand. Nothing was broken, but 3 fingers badly bruised and very sore. I'm gonna come up with some sort of prop for times when I have the hood up for over a couple of minutes. Didn't someone make a prop for use at car shows? ------------------ |

Randy - You can purchase a really nice, high quality telescoping hood support brace at Carquest Auto Parts stores. I use mine all the time,,,,head bruises and crushed fingers are not my idea of a fun day. |

quote: This is what I made, I used 1" x 3/4" aluminum bar, cut 21" long. Wet sanded and polished to look like chrome. On the ends I wrapped some "Funky Foam" - sticky back EVA foam sheet ($.99 per sheet at Hobby Lobby) to protect from scratching and also to hold onto when placing/removing to keep the fingerprints off of it. Added some drill holes for decoration.

Advanced Auto Parts (Columbus, OH) has Prowler hood struts for $19.99 each that include a lifetime replacement warranty. I went with a pair of these since they seem to have about a two year life span. I assume most major auto parts stores have these with similar warranties. ------------------ This message has been edited by kevina on 06-16-2004 at 07:19 AM |

Kevin -are you sure they carry a lifetime warranty on those hood struts? If it doesn't say that on the package, I'd go back to that parts store and get it in writing. I work in auto parts, and I haven't heard of that long of warranty on hood struts before. Not saying you are wrong, just maybe some counterperson told you the wrong info??? |

Good point AC, but he has it in writing. I guess it is like the "lifetime" shocks and brake pads they sell. I asked the counter man about it, and he said, just bring them in with the receipt (which I always keep anyway) if there is a problem. As an engineer myslef, I guess they figure people will sell the car before they ever have to worry about many of these parts coming back. I don't know if they are as "good" as the OEM struts, but as short as some of these seem to last, could they be any worse? |

Kevin - good deal then! Advance Auto Parts may have a run on those struts soon, lol. Can't be any worse than the OEM vendor makes for DC. You are right, most people either sell the car or lose the sales receipt. Thanks for checking on that,,,,I'll send my friends to Advance |

I picked up the hood props and the receipt has the lifetime replacement listed on it. Sounds like a decent deal if you need them. |
