We'll meet in the Fiesta Mall east parking area at 8:30 on Saturday, September 15th and leave around 9:00 AM. Fiesta Mall is just northwest of US 60 and Alma School Rd in Mesa. The first leg of the trip takes us east on US 60 and US 70 through Superior, Miami and Globe. At Globe, we’ll head north up the beautiful Salt River Canyon taking in the scenery as we climb from low desert to high country pines and on to Show Low where we'll stop for lunch. After lunch we’ll visit the go-kart track for Death Match Kart Racing. This has become a Devil’s Highway Tradition. For anyone not interested in go-karts, there’s also shopping and a casino nearby. In the late afternoon we'll regroup at the casino, gas up and take scenic 260 through McNary and Sunrise and wind up in Springerville, where we'll spend the night. For accommodations in Springerville, contact The Rode Inn at 928-333-4365 or 877-220-6553. Rooms are $54.95 for single, $64.95 for double - make sure you mention that you’re with the AZ Prowler Group to get this rate. If you have AAA and/or AARP, you may qualify for other discounts. Their website can be found at: http://www.rodeinn.com/springerville.htm In the event the Rode Inn is booked up by the time you make your reservation, there's the El Jo Lodge just across the street - 928-333-4314. On Sunday we'll head south on US 191 (formerly US Route 666...Devil's Highway...get it?) through Alpine and Hannagan's Meadow. This is one of the best roads for driving in the United States! This 100 mile stretch will take a few hours, depending on how skillful or insane a driver you are. Morenci marks the end of Devil’s Highway - we'll stop there, regroup and check out the Phelps Dodge open pit mine and maybe the miners cemetery. For lunch, I thought we’d stop in Clifton this year instead of going all the way to Safford. Bring a sweater or jacket along since Springerville and the high country get cold in September. Also, bring a 2-way radio and radar/laser detector if you have them. For a map of the general area, go to: http://members.cox.net/cstall/devils_hwy_map.jpg. I'll bring along paper maps for everyone too. If you plan to attend, reply to this email so we know who to expect. Make your room reservations SOON! email Curt > Cstall@cox.net ALLEY CAT Set aside the weekend of September 15 and 16 for the annual Arizona Prowler Owner's Association (AZ POA) Devil's Highway road trip. For those of you who have already experienced Devil's Highway, you know what a good time this trip is. If you haven't done Devil's Highway yet, this is one trip you don't want to miss. Devil's Highway is the stretch of (formerly) US route 666 which runs from Morenci to Springerville in eastern Arizona. It's about 112 miles of the curviest road anywhere - a real challenge for the driving enthusiast and an all-around great cruise through some really scenic country. If you attend just one outing this year, this should be the one!
