MCopelandThe 20-amp ASD fuse under my hood blows & shuts down the car. This was happening about 18 months ago, but stopped after I replaced the battery. It's now happening again. Has anyone dealt with this problem and more importantly, does anyone have a solution?
392HEMIThe ASD (Automatic Shutdown Relay) reads input from all 4 O2 sensor's, both up stream and down stream sensors and their ground wire. The upstream units are grounded to the underbody and the left downstream is grounded to lower left of engine and right to lower right side of engine. I would start with a check of each ground wire and think you may locate a problem there. See if "Check Engine" light comes on, in whicch case it could be an O2 sensor. Good luck.
MCopelandAny chance you have any photos of the O2 sensors & where they're located in the car?
catfishas 392 says,sounds like a wire problem.a bad or worn out part won't blow a fuse,normally.let us know what you find.

392HEMIThe "upstream" sensors are located on the exhaust, in front of the cat converter and the "downstream" are just aft of the cat converter. It is possible that a wire problem caused the ASD Relay to malfunction thus blowing the fuse. Those relays, upstream and downstream are in the underhood black box that houses the fuse, left side of engine bay with big red + on it. Good luck.
catfishif it was a bad 02 sensor,your service engine lite would be on and it would set a code.no lite ,no code no sensor.you might want to also ck.the sensors wires and connectors to make sure there not touching exhaust some where.somethiung is causing it to blow a fuse.

MCopelandReplaced the fuse & now the check engine light is on, car runs rough & then stalls, but fuse isn't blown. Any ideas???
catfishlooks like it set a code.you need to hookup a scanner to
retrive code to see whats wrong.if you dont have one,call around to local auto parts store to see who does,or go to a dealer who will charge you.dont forget to ck, the wiring.it blew a fuse for a reason.

MCopelandJust able to get a mobile guy out here & the codes set are P0340 & P1391 which I was told are Cam Sensor A & B. Has anyone dealt with these codes & had problems here? Could these sensors have also caused my ASD fuse to snap?
catfishpo340 is a camshaft position sensor circut malfunction.could be cam sensor,theres only 1.--code 1391 is a intermittent loss of cmp or ckp- its a cam position and crank position.manual says 0340 is no cam signal at pcm.id replace cam sensor and see if it solves the problem,why its blowing the fuse,could be the sensor.the sensor is at the top rt frt,under plenum.look to rt of upper rad hose and you will see it.change yourself or take to dealer.pm me if you have questions.ive changed mine,but only for preventative maintenance.sensor is shaped like a upsidedown -l-.sensor part # is-4609086.i do believe that you can replace cam sensor w/o removing plenum.if not and you have to partially remove plenum,jmo,id replace all sensors under plenum.

My ex-prowler was backfiring something aweful after I did a dyno run. The codes it threw were "Mis Fire" and "Vacuum Leak" error. This is not related to your issue but in the end it was a loose connection that probably happened back when I had my supercharger installed and this connection was never fully inserted.

Notes from my Tech:

[b]RAN COMPUTER SCAN AND VERIFIED ENGINE MISFIRE AT #6 CYLINDER- TRACED SYSTEM AND FOUND COIL #6 DRIVER WIRES NOT SEATED INTO PCM BOARD. REPAIRED CONNECTION AND REPLACED FOULED OUT #6 SPARK PLUG. RECHECKED AND SYSTEM OPERATION NORMAL AFTER REPAIR


Since you mentioned the problem went away after replacing the battery, my guesses are the following:

The problem may be the alternator.

See if replacing the alternator resolves your issue.

1. Charge up the battery.
2. Clear out the codes.
3. Run it until the P0340 shows.
4. Bring it back home.
5. Clear out the codes.
6. Disconnect the alternator.
7. Isolate the battery terminal at the alternator from any short circuits by wrapping it in electric tape.
8. Take the car on a road trip.
9. If the P0340 code goes away, you found the problem.

Note: The voltage regulator is transmitting stray AC voltage that might be getting picked up by the cam sensor or the PCM and throwing the whole system off.

Do the test in daylight with no loads on...
- no radio
- no headlights
- no fan blower.


Good luck in resolving this issue. Be sure to report back what the root cause ended up being.

MCopelandReplaced the camshaft sensor ($45 at Autozone). Extremely difficult to get the old one out without taking apart the upper engine but finally got it. Reconnected the battery. No codes so far. Drove it about 5 miles without problems. I'll take it out next week for an extended drive & keep you informed. Thanks for your responses
MCopelandWell about 6 months after I replaced the camshaft sensor the car just broke down again with the same code. Barely got it home. Any suggestions?
catfishid replace the sensor again and see what happens.if problem goes away,i would next ck.the wires to the sensor.track them down in the loom,see if any cut or squashed.if this sensor is the one at the frt of the engine,its a tight fit.you do not have to remove complete plenum to change it.remove plenun bolts,and gently lift plenum enough for more clearence to remove sensor.replace it and torque plenum in place.it has silicone gasket.it will not leak,at least mine didnt.report back on outcome.its kind of unusual for that sensor to fail twice.

catfisheven w/the sensor changed,if it was a tone wheel,i think it would run like crap from the get go.sounds like you may have to take to a dealer to get diagnoised.there scanners are much more comprehesive than the cheap ones.did you ever call marvin gohl.the 0340 code ,says no camshaft signal at pcm and no camshaft signal detected during cranking.
