Orange PowerSince the lighter is unswitched power, what is the best and easiest way to tap into switched power or change the lighter to switched power?

Someone suggested tapping into amp under passenger seat, which is fine but I'm not sure how to access the amp and which wires to tap for power and ground.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

ZapcopdI never looked at the amp but you should be able to identify the power wire with a volt meter. You also have to careful how much power you draw. Depends on what you are using this for.
Orange PowerI have a XM radio with cig adapter that drops 12v to 6v for XM radio.

One way is use a female cig plug tapped into a 12v switched wire. I can put an inline fuse on if needed.

ZapcopdI'm sure that doesn't draw much power. An extra in line fuse is always a good idea just to be safe.
TIGRKATI just hooked up an aftermarket Daytime Running Light Module on a 2001. The DRL was installed close to the battery and the wires that I had to tap into for the lights.

I then had to run another wire that energizes the DRL module to a switched power supply. After reading (and I'm not and electrician) the wiring schematics in the Prowler Manuals the best wire that I could find was in the wiring harness under the drivers side dash from the ignition. I had to go through the firewall which was fairly easy because I feed it through the rubber grommet where the harness comes through the firewall. There are 2 – black/white wires that are in the ignition harness and are what you are looking for. One is powered when the ignition is in the “RUN” position and the other one is powered when the ignition is in the “RUN/AUX” positions. Just remove the 2 screws that holds the cover under the steering wheel and they are fairly accessible…….as accessible as any wiring is on these cars as the bandaids and scars on my fingers show!!

Hope this helps.

RichOBB, Yes it was - Thanks! DRLs are becoming standard in the US and I, for one, would like them on the Kat. Which ones did you get and where did you locate on the front? Pix would help if you have them..
TIGRKATI used the HAMSAR model 70987 DRL module which I bought in Canada through a major retailer called Canadian Tire. Up here the module cost ~$40. (HAMSAR.com)

I had bought a set of manuals off of member Garysss and it was a major help when figuring out the wiring for the low beam, high beam and parking light connections. Tap Splice connectors are supplied to make the installation easier. It took me a little while to figure things out because I’m not an electrician but everything works fine and I passed the governments import inspections.

If you buy one of these modules I can tell you where each coloured wire from the module connects to the Prowler wiring.
