| hollywoodinjax | i think my AMP is going bad.
i hear the whining, and my sound goes in and out.
i have checked the Ohms between the ground strap on the bak of the stereo and another ground and i had 0.8 at 200k.
i got the same results when checking the Ohms between the Amp and a ground.i have to test it again, but i think when i removed the 12-pin connector out of the Amp, the Ohms went to 0.0 the main reson i think it is the Amp is because the in and out sound, and the Amp has been slightly wet from the leaky top. what i am realy trying to do is find a quick way to test out my conclutioin. i can not find a wiring diag for this amp anywhere. i was able to find another infinity 36670 for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 1999-2004 that has the same 12-pin and 18-pin connectors..
by it seems that vehical only has 6 speaker and i think we have 7.
which looking at the diag attached, the 12-pin is the Output to the speakers which confused me. i would have throught it was the 18-pin one. 12-pins would only give me enough wires for the 6 speackers where is the 7th wired from?

| catfish | i could be wrong,i think the prowler only has 6 speakers.the one with the grille over it in the sound box,is not really a speaker its a sound exit.you would have to check with johnc,from kechi ks.he was kind of our resident stereo expert,but he doesnt post much anymore.when i replaced all my speakers,there were only 6. ------------------

| jjprowler | The 7th speaker is the sub woofer.As for the wine ck the ground on the back of the radio. Mind did the same thing just unbolt clean with sand paper,rebolt.If you car is a 2000 or up there is switch on the radio bezal to make the sound go up and down with the speed of the car just incase you over look it. |
| hollywoodinjax | i have not pulled of the ground off the back of the stereo yet because when the 12-pin connector in the app was disconnected there was no "ground loop" the Ohms were 0 zero. which makes me think it is connection off the 12-pin connection. what is off that connection? is it like the Jeep, speaker out? the sounds goes in and out, what i mean by that, the sounds is normal, then there is a whine, then normal, could be normal for the entire day. then it will be completely out (muted), then come on again, and sound purfect..
if there is a blown speaker, could that cause the "Ground loop" and the sound to go in-and-out (sound-then-mute)? |
| catfish | a bad speaker wont cause that,the other ones will still work.have you checked the antenna amplifier plug,to make sure its locked in place.its under the top of the dash rt side.you must remove the top of dash to access it.the small amplifier boosts the radio signal,cause the antenna is in the w/s. ------------------

| hollywoodinjax | i am not loosing AM/FM signal. this "muting" is happening with the CD player as well.
i did get a wire diag lastnight and the Jeep's wiring is NOT the same, there are several Pin-outs that are different. but since i got the actual wiring diag, i guess the Jeeps was not needed anymore. just an FYI to anyone else thinking that the Jeeps may be similar, they are not.. looks the same from the outside, that is it.
the 18 Way connector for the Prowler's is the output for the speakers.
also, looks like the Sub (7th) speaker is using the 4 wires off the 18 Way connector.

| hollywoodinjax | i pulled the radio lastnight and sanded/cleaned the braided ground strap. this did not help any. i am giving up and calling the AMP as bad. anyone know if there is a 12 way Wire loom, and 18 way wire loom that will fit the stock wires under the seat. i would rather use the existing wire and not cut up or splice the original. the connectors would need to be like the ones on the AMP. |

There are three speakers in the speaker enclosure behind the seats. You have to remove the entire speaker box to get to it. It is a dual voice coils subwoofer. |
| hollywoodinjax | i removed the amp and just put a temp bridge to wire the speakers straight from the radio. i now have sound...
now i need to look for a perm solution.

Let me know what solution you came up with. I am having the same problem with the whine although it is not cutting in and out yet. I also fear the amp is going. Previous owner apparently liked it very loud as most of the speakers were blown out too. |
| ed monahan | You don't have to turn the volume up to blow the speakers.
They are very poor quality. |

| Greg and Veta | I am curious too. I have been considering the Alpine PDX-5 as it is small and should fit under the seat well, however if the OP still has that leaky top (oh I hope not) they may may want to consider the PDX-5M which is the marine version. |
| spoons | Yes, that buzzing/humming sound is a bad channel in the amp. I had the same issue; the amp went bad a few years back. I bought a refurbished amp from Jay Harris "Yeller-Cat". I was told the amp is unique to the car and in order to replace the amp with a non OEM one, the entire audio system would need to be upgraded $$$$$$ I can ask Jay if he know someone who will fix/repair your amp.
