private listing - bidders' identities protected Could this mean the seller is bidding against himself (shill bidder)? More to the point, I guess, is how do bidders tell eBay to list them as a "private bidder" That's what I would do if I knew I had the option. private listing - bidders' identities protected Could this mean the seller is bidding against himself (shill bidder)? A lot of buyers don't want to be contacted by email or have a buyers name tagged to a certain item. Ebay does sell "adult items", not to say that is the case here but to explain why someone would not want to be contacted. Even ESCROW websites are handling tranactions to protect the buyer from having their information all over the web. You can see these tire valve caps on Prowler ebay -- it's about to expire. Each bidder is assigned an anonymous name, that is used consistently throughout the bid history for an itemRichO What does it mean when you receive an outbid notice and the bid listing gives this as the identity of the other bidder: ed monahan No. Not necessarily. It could be just someone that doesn't want to be known. RichO Then I'm wondering why everyone doesn't opt for this as in sealed bidding. Revealing pseudo identities gives other bidders info on bidding patterns, how much someone wants it (bidding frequency), etc. Gort quote:

One of the best tricks on ebay is to contact the seller after his item did not sell saying he missed bidding because of his job, offering a little less it hopes that you can now sell cheaper because it isn't going by ebay rules/fees. Car dealers do this every day, they have their store listed in huge print with the telephone number.RichO ok, guys, here it is bjprowler Are you referring to these? RichO Yes, the third one down currently at 10.49 The start bid was actually me at 9.99. Looks like they've got me hidden as well. This is all new to me. So I guess my question now is -- how does a seller make all the bidders private? Since I'm most always a buyer, don't know what's involved. And why would seller want to do this for a 10-15 buck item?? Maybe it's what Gort says -- for porn items. Weird fetish = valve stem covers... beachcat Rich, these are plastic and easy to strip if you're not careful. I bought a set and wasn't that impressed. RichO Rog, kinda thought so, but these were going to be for a trailer so if I stripped one, I'd still have one xtra left. Of course, if I put over 100K mi (160+ km) the UVA would burn them to a crisp and I've have to put fake badges on them. garysss All bidders on ebay are always hidden now, until the sale is final. Than only winning bidder is shown. RichO Gary, when did this policy begin? I went to ebays kat listings and all those with bids on them, up to 21, had the old bidder ids listed. garysss I'm sorry, I meant they are hidden by disguising your User ID. I think they did this to stop other sellers or buyers contacting people bidding on similar items. The Private listing is something seller or buyer must request I guess. I've never done that. garysss If you click on the bidder Question mark above Private listing, it shows this. beachcat It seems like the anonymus name is just the first and last letter in your ID. You can sometimes figure out who it is. garysss Sometimes you can figure it out. but you used to be able to just click on name on bidders list and email that person. Now you can't.
