I have been saying this for years "You can use your transmission to help you stop or your brakes. Which ever you want to replace. Brakes are much cheaper to replace so it isn't smart to use your transmission to slow or stop you." My son said, "these are words he lives by from his father". He is passing this on to other people he cares for. If this is going to be my "legacy of wisdom", I better be right. I was just thinking. Am I right? This used to be the case with stick shift transmissions. You could wear out the clutch or the brakes. I would like everyone's input. Let me know what you have found in your experiences. Also if any of you are Prowler Tech People let us know. If you are a professional transmission repair shop, let us know that also. ------------------ |

Purple Been using tranny (auto) for years on my truck to stop or slow down and on my car since I got it. On the car I like the sound of the exhaust and since I drive it mostly in stick just seems easier. Interested to hear others opinions or facts. ------------------ |

Jim - for slow in town driving, I use the brakes. When on streets or freeway speeds above 50MPH, I use the gears to slow it down. I figure I got seven years to find out if tranny is going to be able to take it, or replace it. Jim, got new sparkle orange yet? |

Darn it to heck, but no I have not gotten the orange yet. I paid for it two weeks ago. I am waiting for the trucking company to pick it up, and deliver it to me. I'll let you know when I get it so you can get your prime rib... |

Your going to LOVE the Orange, assuming it is not cracked like mine! I use my tranny sometimes in my vans to slow down. Done it for years without damage, auto's all. However, not sure if this is how it is supposed to work or not. Both my Kat's will NOT let me select what gear I want them to be in, in auto stick, it goes where it wants to based upon (it seems) RPM by itself, I cannot pre select an auto stick gear! This makes it usless to slow down, or even shift! ------------------ |

To slow down generates energy (usually wear & heat, except in some electric vehicles where it generates wear & electricity). The wear & heat energy can be put into the brakes, or the powertrain. Brakes are definitely cheaper. The 'downshift' to slow down has been passed down to me from my dad and before him, my grandad; which goes back to the early 1900's. 'Tradition' is a hard thing to change. So use 'common sense'; but as the saying goes "Common sense is not so common". This is the purely technical aspect, now lets put in the 'fun' or emotional aspect; sometimes it is just plain fun to downshift, and listen to the exhaust, or the engine roar, or to play with the car. After all these cars are made for fun, and to play with. Nelson |

I use the tranny to sound cooler but the tranny breaking is not only is hard on the Tranny but what about the Motor. I do not recommmend using the Tranny/engine braking at all. JOMO ------------------ |

Using the standard braking system loads the brakes, tires suspension. By downshifting, the load is transfered all the way from the engine to the tires, including everything in between. As was said earlier, brakes are the cheapest to replace, so if economics are the focus, use the brakes. If you want to have fun, downshift the trans. BTW-most big rigs are fitted with the Jacob braking system that uses crankcase pressure to slow them down. These trucks run millions of miles--so go figure. ------------------ |

Todd, My 99 Cat when in auto stick mode will stay in whatever gear I put it in until I shift it. This applies to shifting up or down (+ or -). The only exception to this is when you come to a complete stop. It will then automatically shift down to 1st. However then you can place it in whatever gear you want to start off in. I have even started off in 3rd just to see if it would do it. I don't think the 00 or 01 Cats should be any different, but I may be wrong. Rich Ware ------------------ |

I came from the days when brakes wore out fast and were not really cheap. Using the transmission to brake became the rule of thumb, in order to save on brakes. Not the case anymore. Brakes are longer lasting and relatively cheap. Transmissions are complicated and expensive. However, I to love the sound of an occasional "down shift"! ------------------ |

My trusted mechanic agrees with the "brakes are better and cheaper" theory. As for my opinion, I'd rather have the assurance of all 4 wheels attempting to drag me down rather than the 2 wheel force that the transmission braking effects. ------------------ |
