with the state of the US auto makers and the economy in general, do you think striking is the best move? They may end up striking themselves out of a job.

On one hand have to agree with your statement

On the other, we gave up a lot about 20 years ago

The corporate gave up a little, in 5 years or less they got all theirs back plus

We went 12 years without a raise, Cost of living allowance hasn’t been restored

The 2 tier…… more like 3 tier was a horrible idea but I said from the time I hired in it was coming

Our employee discount on new vehicles is down to covering sales tax in most cases

I started paying UAW union dues in 1976, now retired and living on fixed income can only hope they get this settled.

If it weren’t for the fact they hire a CEO that knows nothing about automobiles, give them a golden parachute that is like hitting the lottery every year then when they don’t produce they fire them & hit the MEGA MILLIONS LOTTERY again

The companies pay the corporate lawyers more than the labor cost on each vehicle

There isn’t a simple answer

One thing that irritated me was Ford claim Quality was job one……everywhere I have worked managements #1 job is quantity then the labor force gets blamed for poor quality

Much has to do with management bonuses it’s about the numbers not the quality

These people or the company will never make up for the moneys lost during a strike

The same is true at GM and Chrysler,,,, bottom line profit
is the only thing that matters for the companies.

Worked for Chrysler in 76-79

Actually all switched from storing large quantities of finished product to a Just In Time

After WWII. Guy named Deming went to American manufactures to try and sell them on Just In Time (JIT) they wouldn’t buy into it

He went to Japan and the Japanese manufacturer were open to improvement in rebuilding their industry. Also with the Japanese businesses were in close proximity to one another making JIT more feasible

Once the Japanese automakers started selling more vehicles here the American manufacturers were behind the 8 ball now chasing market share, but the management team still had old mindset

I also worked several years for the Japanese electronics company & had anti union training (really surprised they hire an ex UAW union dues paying employee ) the Japanese has the JIT system refined. 2-3 days stock on hand but if that doesn’t work modify it

What the American manufacturers do is set their ideal JIT system, if it doesn’t work well, it works on paper so always out of parts so build with missing parts and go back and repair later but get the end of line numbers

I drove the rejects to shop for repair for the last several years of employment

Floor supervision & up relies on that number to calculate bonuses

The Japanese actually treat their employees better. It was while I worked for the Japanese is when I seen how the US would change the way it operates but the management still treats them like crap.

Use to management was brought up off the floor, in 80’s they wanted college degrees to supervise when they had little to no clue how it worked

Well I should have never started typing on this thread

I just hope they come to an agreement soon

Oh, the union has its own issues. It isn’t like they are angels

I worked on the C & O R.R. 1965-68 (but was gone to the Army for two years) and the HIGHEST rated trains were the B-O-P train cars. Buick-Olds-Pontiac. Any trains in front them were pulled into a siding so they could pass. We had Fischer/Fisher body here plus the Norwood plant made all of the Firebirds and Camaros for some of those years. I guess they were getting parts as needed as I think they were every day deliveries, but not sure of that after 55 years.
They are saying Ford and the UAW have reached a tentative agreement, yet to be ratified.
