I had the low tire light on for some time. I had a new sensor reprogrammed the other day, and the low tire light came back on, which is when the check gage light appeared. Previously, when the low tire light was on for a few weeks, the check gage light never lit. |

Tank is full, all gauge levels are normal. I am at the chrysler dealer having them run a diagnostic check. I wanted to be well informed before they gave me a prognosis. This message has been edited by Hamlyn on 01-17-2014 at 01:02 PM |

if you had a bad alt.it would show dischrge on the gauge.if its not its not the alt.is the gauge showing charge or discharge.ypu said all gauges normal.get a a/m alt.much cheaper, from the price sounds like they are ripping you a new one.fact alternators were discontinued along long time ago, unless they started to make more.alternators dont cost that much, installed, you want to see the mopar box. ------------------ This message has been edited by catfish on 01-17-2014 at 03:06 PM |

Thanks for the quick response, Catfish. After I parked the car at the Chrysler service center, they were unable to start it back up. They attached an external battery and it started up immediately. When they removed the external battery, the engine died. They ran a diag and came back with a bad alternator and battery. Unfortunately, I did not pay attention to the voltage gauge to see what level it was displaying. This message has been edited by Hamlyn on 01-17-2014 at 05:00 PM |

I have to agree with Catfish, if your gauge shows charging and the car starts, it's not the alt. My gauge came on before when I had a loose battery terminal. This message has been edited by garysss on 01-17-2014 at 03:13 PM |

I called the service guy at Chrysler. Looks like the alternator does not show a charge when the motor is running... I am told that an alternator for the Prowler are specific to that model and needs to be special ordered. Does anyone know if other model alternators will work/fit on a 2001 Prowler? In the upper right side of the page is the word search. Click on it. You'll be amazed at the information that comes up telling you where you can get cheaper alternators. The battery starts the car and runs the periferals like radio and headlights. Once your car is running it runs off the alternator. Normally, you can start your car and disconnect the battery and your car continues running. If it dies when you disconnect the battery after starting it, that's because its running off the battery instead of the alternator. This message has been edited by idive on 01-17-2014 at 04:47 PM |

I replaced alt and battery ,serpentine belt for about $300 and two hours labor in my garage. The dealers will rip you off. The alt can be found from many sources from $130 to $300 with or without clutch. Good luck |

I'm compelled to jump in here for just a moment. JFYI, my experience with alternators and starters from aftermarket sources are poor at the best. It took me years of expensive testing to come up with this answer. I have several other cars other than the Prowler and I am a new car dealer. In 45 years as a dealer, I've installed lots of alternators and starters. I personally will only put factory elect. items on my personal cars and on my used cars that I sell. Otherwise I end up doing the job twice. And at current labor prices thats just not economical. If my alternator does quit on the Prowler, I will choose a factory one. |

Bob, where will you get a factory alternator? The factory didn't make them, they were bought from a vendor. I am not trying to argue with you but Chrysler doesn't stock alternators for Prowlers. |

Just a small contribution on Check Guage light. This past weekend, I took the car out, started OK out of the garage, stopped about 2 miles from my house, tried to start again and dead as a doornail. NOTHING! Finally got a jump with doubled cables to get enough amps, drove about 3 miles, check guage light came on, looked at guages, and was showing about 14 1/2 volts, all other guages fine. So if it "overcharges", light will come on as well. Since this thread was fresh on my mind, I was afraid alternator as well, but mine was bad battery. Once replaced, no more light. Only post this FYI. |

quote: PepBoys alternators have life Time Warrenties, I have had one on my car now for 7 years, Never had any problems with exchanges. Also have one on my Dodge Pickup. Seems there is a problem with the FACTORY ones as they seem to fail early. Most venders rebuild them correctly, there are some that do not. The factory ones that came with the car seem no better as I had 2 replaced under warrenty on the Prowler. The first one failed in less than 6 months.
