New Prowler Owner 2 weeks ago.
I have OEM tires on my 2002 Prowler. They are hard as a hockey puck and almost 20 years old. I don't have confidence in them.

I am trying to find new tires for the car but selection is very limited.
Can I run NITO 315/30ZR20 (101Y) on the rear of my Prowler?
NITO has the correct front size but not the rear.
If not, what are the best performance tires for the Prowler that can survive New England winters?
Some summer performance tires shouldn't be used below 40 degrees. That is half the year in N.E.

one thing you need to watch for is the actual outside diameter of the tire. The stock tire is only about an inch away from the ends of the frame rails. So if you go 1/2" larger, you will rub the frame rail over bumps. This can lock up the tire for a split second and can also damage other components of the suspension.

You need to google the OD of the stock tire and compare it with the OD of the tire you want to replace it with.

I have NITTO 295/40ZR20 110W on the rear. The ride is far better than the original run flats. I believe these are still available.

i ordered nittos but one rear was on back order forever. so they upgraded me at no added cost to continentals. im happy with them, but im comparing to 20 year old run-flats also .
new tires period are always a good ride .

Are these good for the rear?

As the poster in New England said, where I live the temperatures are below 45 degrees half the year. Is that a real issue or just a liability disclaimer?

What about the shop not damaging the rims? How can one tell if that will happen to a Prowler?

Take your center caps off BEFORE you go to the tire store. Use half of an old spring clip clothes pin. The pointy end will work great without damaging the cap. DON'T use a screwdriver or other steel products.

About five years ago I researched tires for my Prowler and decided on the Continental ContiSportContact™ 5 rather than the Extreme Contact because I thought the tread pattern was closer to the O.E. Goodyear tires in appearance.

Here is a link for the topic from back then: http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000109.html

More recently, I did some research on the Continental Tires website and it appears they still make the ContiSportContact™ 5 for the front but no longer make this particular tire for the rear in the correct size for the Prowler.

They do offer the SportContact™ 6 for the rear tire but don't offer one for the front.

You might be lucky and find some new old stock somewhere IF you have a resourceful tire provider in your area.

Other choices might be the Pirelli P Zero or the Nitto.

For reference:

The correct size tires for the prowler are Front (225/45 R17) / Rear (295/40 R20)

NOTE: These tires are Summer rated Performance Tires, and NOT approved as Snow or All Weather tires.

I went with the Nitto tires on the rear. I really like the way they look and they handle much better than the old Continentals that I've scrapped. They were also pleasantly the least expensive tires available for the rear at $300.00 apiece. The Continentals would squeak on hard turns, though they never broke away the way my old Japanese Falkens so dramatically on one unhappy hair-raising occasion. I was pleasantly surprised to see That the Nitto tires were made in the United States. According to the dealership, The Nitos are all weather tires. They are unidirectional and cannot be rotated. I do not believe there are 17 inch matching tires to fit the front. I would have bought front tires to match if there had been. Does anyone on this forum have a suggestion for front tires at this time? I still have the Continentals up there but as I said, I prefer the look and driving feel of the nitto tires. I prefer to have matching tires if possible, though i know that's been very difficult to accomplish for Prowler owners for a long time. I am running on original stock wheels and followed Ed’s wise suggestion that I take the center cop caps off before allowing the dealer to touch them. I don't believe that he was surprised, as his last encounter with my center caps Resulted in the destruction of the tabs. I didn't take much offense of this as the event, allowed me the opportunity to try the neodymium magnet trick which I have to report was satisfyingly successful. Nevertheless I was eager to avoid further damage to the caps.
