As I look at my front susp, there is a while chalky buildup UNDER the clear coat. How can I get rid of that and seal the metal to keep it from returning????

The chalky build-up is aluminum corrosion. Left untreated, pits will begin to form in the alumnium. It's possible that the clear coat has small cracks in it that have allowed moisture to get in underneath, allowing the corrosion to form.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how you're going to be able to resolve it without removing the clearcoat.

Dave Mills had this problem and had them repainted. You need to ask him for the details of what he did.

I removed the arms from my car, ground away the casting/forging flashing that is all around the arms. I then paintstripped the clearcoat, then had the arms shot-blasted. The arms were then treated to a coat of clear-laquer that is designed for bare aluminium.
The arms look better than new with the bonus of no casting edges. Look is stock with a twist....

Dave,

Got any pictures of that suspension you'd be willing to share?

Here's some pics of Dave Haggas' front supension. Looks very nice. I might have to consider doing something like that to my car.

That is a great looking front end. I suspect it did not cost $2,000+ to do it either, right? What was the total cost? Very nice...

Thanks guys for your kind words. I must admit I hate dirty looking cars. The front end on mine prior to me stripping it was pretty dirty, especially the hub/uprights.
The costs involved were small. All the labour was my own with the exception of the grit blasting and the clear-coat to the arms. Removing the casting marks from the wishbones and also from the upright was very labour intensive. With the upright and wishbones clearcoated, maintaining a clean finish is very easy. All nuts were replaced by stainless nylocs.I may just do the same to the rear end now....
