There's been a great deal of speculation as to what DC would actually replace in the Prowler recall. Up until now, the lower ball joint was serviced/sold only as part of the lower control arm. Replacing only the lower control arm would create issues for owners of the earlier cars with the painted arms and owners that have polished or chromed their control arms which would create mismatched control arms.

DC is releasing a separate (from the control arm) replacement ball joint. Only the joints will be replaced during the recall which eliminates the need for replacing the control arm and thus creating the mismatch.

Note: The earlier control arms were a semi-solid forging vs. the later control arms which are cast. The originals had a painted finish and the later ones have the raw cast aluminum finish. The earlier type of control arm was discontinued, creating the problem of matching finishes.

CJ- Do you know if, as part of this recall, a front end alignment will be performed also? Thanks, Buddy.

CJ, Thanks a Ton, as you often have you've provided the answer of a concern I had, before I was even able to ask it.

buddy.......don't know that for sure. Have not seen that mentioned..........

Technically, if they are only replacing the ball joint, it isn't necessary to do a front-end alignment.

CJ,

Do you know if the replacements will have grease fittings (I hope)?

Thanks.

I happened to be at my local daeler on Thur. 2/13.
They said they had received no notice of the recall at that time, but they would keep a watch and asked me to forward any information that I had or may get from POA or any other sources. They seemed genuinely interested.

The General Manager cxalled mee back on Fri. to assure me that they would handle promptly once they had the notice and received the appropriate parts. He did say that getting the parts made and distributed to all dealers would take time and said in previous recalls this was the delay that made car owners anxious.

I have been checking NHTSA daily. It was not posted on Wednesday during the chat, but it did hit on Friday. See my post for the full gov't description:

I'm going to take mine to the dealership that does Mike K's fleet, I figure he'll be real good at it before he gets to mine.

Obviously the recall is official, I heard it on the news this morning here in Dallas, so if the news knows, the dealers should know by now.

No, it's official because the Government says it's official:

SnoCat,

The recall says 11,698 units affected. That would have to include the Canadian Kats.

Don't know if that view is conclusive. The only official notice we have seen so far is from the NATIONAL Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NATIONAL = United States. Does it apply to cars SOLD in the United States or cars MANUFACTURED in the United States? Anyone know conclusively?

CJ,
Do you know if this will include mine? I think my car was the 2nd or third to fail. They replaced the left at the time but the right side wasnt replaced til last year. Were mine replaced with the same kind as I had before? Probably so, I would think.......??????

SnoCat........based on the fact that all Prowlers were built in the U.S. and based on the number they have given, we would assume that the Prowlers sent to Canada would be included.

Don........we would assume, that yes, yours would also be included.

The DaimlerChrysler Employee News Daily (internal daily newsletter) February 14, 2003 issue states:

quote:
The Chrysler Group is also recalling 11,655 1997-2002 Chrysler and Plymouth Prowlers ot replace the lower ball joint on the front suspension to prevent it from potentially separating from the control arm due to corrosion."

Hmmmmmmm......corrosion huh? If you can pull up the pics of mine, there was NO corrosion. It was bone dry of lubricant. Will the new ones have grease nipples......or do we know yet. To me the only real correction to the problem would be lubrication?
