There are only 2 ways to check a ball joint.
1.) visually
2.) unload the suspension, place a pry bar under the wheel/tire and pry up to see it it is sloppy.
Normally ball joints should last a very long time.

Someone posted the steering gets tight before the ball joint fails.

One possible test is to slowly drive in a tight circle and let go of the steering wheel. If the Kat does not straighten out the steering is too tight and possibly due to the ball joints rusting out.
