Ed,
We may be onto something here. Also consider that water would take longer to cause a failure than brake cleaner for 2 reasons:
1. Brake cleaner is a better solvent for grease, and would tend to work through the protective grease barrier that builds up between the rubber seal and the metal.
2. Once it gets into the joint, brake cleaner will act as a "thinner" versus water co-existing ss "blobs" (don't remember the technical term when you put oil/grease into water - and they don't mix).
Also, if pressure washing has been used to clean these areas, it may also force water WITH CAR WASH into the joints more quickly, with the car wash acting somewhere between water and brake cleaner.
The plot thickens!

Ed and Growl,
its possible I guess???? When I had my problem, the socket was completely dry as if there were never any grease at all. I remember sticking my finger in the socket and getting nothing but RUST DUST on it. I thought I had a picture of it for Bruce but couldnt find it on the disc. Ive had no brake work ever on my car as of yet. It will be comming soon though..........

Did any of the cars with failed balljoints have a brake job that included the use of brake cleaner?

I just replaced my pads and sprayed off the dust with brake cleaner. A puddle formed right over the lower balljoint and, remembering this post, I quickly blew it out. If I left the puddle, it looks like it could have found its way into the balljoint. End of balljoint in a few thousand miles.

Comments?

I can see no way that anything liquid can get into the ball joint unless the rubber boot has a hole in it.

The ball joint is pressed into the lower control arm from the bottom and the pin extends through the top. A rubber umbrella style boot covers and seals the top of the exposed portion of the ball joint then the steering knuckle slides down on the tapered pin which compresses the rubber boot as the ball joint nut is tightened.

Where would any liquid have a chance to get in?

Guys,
Grease your ball joints.
There are grease fittings on them.
53,000 miles on my 2000 and no problems.
I grease mine every 5000 miles with Mobil 1 grease.

KoolKat, the problem is the only ones you can grease are the top ones for the front wheels. Its the lower ball joint that is breaking. has anyone found a replacement part that is able to have a grease fitting. What do other Chrysler cars use..maybe we can swap.

Im at 35K so im thinking maybe i should just replace mine. they cant be that expensive. and the job cant be that hard.

I was actually looking under the car the other day and noticed scrapes all along the left lower control arm. Im wondering if this has already happened with its previous owner.
