According to my 2000 Prowler Service Manual: section 2, page 19 "Note: The lower ball joint is pressed into the front lower control arm, but is not a replaceable component of the control arm.........the lower control arm will need to replaced as a complete assembly" Anybody got anything to clarify? My recall notice only says ball joints...

The original service procedure was to replace the lower arm with the ball joint. The ball joint was not sold or serviced separately. DC has developed a procedure and tool to replace the ball joints rather than replace the arms. There were two different types of control arms manufactured during the life of the Prowler. Only the last design is available. Owners with cars with the earlier design and those that have chromed or polished arms would not appreciate having the newer style installed. The issue was the ball joint and DC is replacing all of them with a new design. This allows for much less disassembly during the repair and should make the owners happy.

Your right CJ. I am extremly happy with this new process so that I will never have to replace my glossy early design A Arms. I never relly gave it much thought but this recall is a blessing in disguise.

Thanks CJ, You answered the very question I was thinking as I was just reading the same passage in the service manual.
You are a fountain of knowledge with this car....

(Thanks to indy96 for asking it first....)

Another interesting fact quoted verbatim in my 2001 manual....

"Due to the lower control arm being made of aluminum and the ball joint being made out of steel (dissimilar metals), corrosion may occur between the pieces. For this reason, the lower ball joint has a corrosion preventative coating applied to it."

(Oh well, guess the coating didn't work huh?)

My dealer lost their Prowler tech, have only sold and serviced one Prowler (mine), and I'm a bit nervous knowing that I know some things better than they do regarding the car. Oh well, the service manager is a hot rodder car nut, and he seems to really care about doing the car right. He mentioned the extra care needed to not damage the control arms or scuff them up. They seem to respect the car....and they have the Prowler tool kit! SO I made my appt and I'm going for it next week. I hope they will be familiar enough with the Prowler at least from working on mine. I was told I am the guinea pig... LOL
