What exactly is the cause of these failing joints? Lack of lub, cracked boots, or just a production problem. Or contamination from cracked boots? Are the old ones bone dry and have no lub in them or what?

its stated in your recall notice. if you haven't got yours yet, see "copy of recall notice" farther down the list of topics. basically, old ones allow dirt and water in and corrosion takes place causing a failure.

It's a combination of cracked boots letting in moisture which accelerates the corrosion as the metals are dissimilar to begin with. Steel ball joints next to aluminum can cause corrosion which is stated right up front in the shop manual, surprisingly enough!

I was told the boot you see below will tear or the ring seal above and below the rubber boot will allow moisture to sip into the ball joint causing rust to build up.
