I had my recall done today....

The mechanic was cool enough to let me wander under the car, (which was scary considering the car was on 2 improper lift points in the rear and one of the front lifts actually slipped off at one point.... )

I looked up under the front shock "brace bar" from underneath and noticed the front shocks were leaking. I am getting them replaced under warranty. The car only has 4,000 miles on it! I told them it seems to be a common problem, and thanks to this board, I knew to look for such a thing.

Also worth mentioning is that with only 4,000 miles on an '01 Prowler, it took a good bit of grease in the 4 ball joints you CAN lube.

REMEMBER: You CAN lube the front upper ball joints, and the rear lower ball joints! We were surprised to see upon prying off the lower rear ball joint grease fitting cap that it had a good bit of water sitting at the bottom of it!

THE LESSON: Lube the fittings often and check the caps from time to time to check on water collecting inside them!

Got the coolant drained...(NOT flushed).....brought my own distilled water for them to use. The mechanic (Prowler Tech is gone) was very thorough and got every bit of air out. He assured me that I will have no need to add any water when he was through. that was cool.

Other than that I'm sorry to hear about the horror stories some of you had with the recalls, and though I was at the dealer for a good part of the day, I have to give the mechanic a lot of credit for being thorough, cautious, and careful with the shiny parts... I didn't mind being there a few extra hours when I got to spend half of it next to the car while he was working on it. I tried not to be a pain, but on the other hand, he never worked on a Prowler before! Good thing he was good enough to translate his knowledge of cars to the Prowler....But there are still things that were helpful to point out that are unique to the car. All in all I was happy with my dealer service.

..And GRROWL.....No Bars Leaks went back in, buddy. I'm getting away from the "swamp look"...LOL.

Black Tie, Thanks for the suggestions. I took my car to the dealer and they said all four shocks were leaking and will be replaced under warranty. This is strange because my 01 Silver only has 5560 miles and has never been abused or driven on bad roads. The dealer thinks that they were damaged in transit when new. Has anyone else heard of this theory?

I think our shocks are simply another "weak link" Just wait till these cars are 10 and 20 years old!

Hey blubyu....Glad the suggestion helped someone out!

Todd: You would THINK the replacement shocks would be redesigned by now! I know they switched out from Koni around 99 to another brand....

My 2000 had the earlier model Koni shocks. The replacements were the newer ones.

My shocks are being replaced tomorrow with the ball joints...1st set of shocks leaked at 3,000 miles...these lasted 4,000 miles....I'm told they are Koni brands...

I have just shy of 24'000 miles on my 99. No signs of leaking. Mine say KONI in large letters on the ring at the very top of the shock. On the trips to Woodward in 2000 & 2001 I traveled some of the worst paved (I use the term loosely) roads imaginable. One of the worst highways is the PA Turnpike. Nearly shook every tooth in my mouth loose. If anyone's shocks (except for Marty and a few others that have daily drivers) had an excuse to be leaking it would be mine. Marty how many miles on the KONI's before they leaked?

Rich - over 50,000, probably closer to 53K or 54K before dealer agreed to replace. Another dealer checked them last year at 35K just before warranty expired for leaks and said they were OK then.
