I took my car to the dealer today after they assured me they had the parts and the special tool! They didn't do it because they couldn't find the Prowler tool kit. My question is: Is the special tool used with other tools that the dealer should already have for the Prowler? They said it would take 10-15 days for the tool kit to arrive. Can they even still get them? I am a little worried about the dealer but they do work on Prowlers and Viper which I hope is not giving me a false sense of assurance.

As I understand it, they had to develop a new tool to aid in the repairs and it would have to be purchased by the dealer. I do not know if they are used in conjunction with the original Prowler tool kit.

The tool used to break the ball joints loose from the steering knuckle are part of the original Prowler Tool Kit. It is placed between the upper and lower ball joints and then lengthened by use of a wrench. It is a threaded unit and gets longer as you turn the nut. The pressure then dislodges the ball joint pin from the steering knuckle. The pressing tool (large c-clamp style) and collar/sleeve are what needed to be designed for the recall. Here is a picture of the ball joint press being used. The other tool I did not get a picture of, but was as Larry described, a threaded tool to gently pull the pieces apart (instead of knocking them apart with a hammer)

Larry, My dealer said they had that C-Clamp for quite some time. they said it is an old tool rarely used anymore, but has come back in style for this recall. He said the rarity is that most dealers just don't have it around anymore, it is so old....The pressing sleeve is from the tool kit. BTW blu: How does your dealer claim to work on Prowlers if they don't even have the tool kit?) Just a thought.
