I had my ball joints replaced today at Chrysler Jeep of White Plains (N.Y.)and everything went great. My Mulholland has 3,400 miles on it.
The Prowler tech was Joe Cavaliere. Joe is a real pro. He allowed me to express my concerns, give him some input I had gotten from everyone at POA and he LISTENED. He asked for help when he needed it and took his time. He did have one slight hang up on the right side ball joint but he resolved it and devised a way to make the left side go easier. Let me explain. First off this was Joe's first Prowler ball joint replacement but since he is the only person besides me to ever touch my Kat in a mechanical way, I trusted him and he was confident that everything would go smoothly. He protected all the surfaces he was working around as best as he could. He started on the right side and discovered that the boot was ripped. The left side was not. He removed the right ball joint as planned but was having a hard time removing the tool from the hole in the control arm. After a few failed attempts he, with the help of another mechanoc were able to bang the tool out from underneath using a socket as a punch. Once removed he noticed that the spring clip which holds the lower portion of the ball joint in place had become wedged between the tool and the hole preventing the tool from coming out easily. On the left side he cut open the ball joint first, removed the spring clip and then used the tool to remove the ball joint and the tool was removed from the hole much easier. Other than that one minor problem the process was a breeze.
After watching this my guess is that the control arms get damaged when the machanic gets frustrated or nervous and starts wacking on the tool and misses or tries to pry the tool out and uses the control arm for leverage.

So my advise is this, Speak to your tech first, explain your concerns, ask some questions and see if he is listening. If you are satisfied with what his response is, then go for it. If you don't, leave and find some place else. There are plenty of compitent techs out there.
Good luck and I hope you find this info. helpfu.

Dave.

Glad it's done... It's really it snap to remove the clip before. We learned the same lesson here back to this link...

It makes the job a hold lot easier to remove the clip before removing the ball joint...

It sure does. I wish I had seen that post before I brought my car in. It would have made the whole thing easier plus I wouldn't have bored you all with the lengthy details.
