A picture is worth 1000 words. What the ball joint recall turned into when the upper ball joint had to be replaced on my Prowler. Warning - not for the feint of heart. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/image_uploads/frontview.jpg[/img] The mechanic completely disassembled the front end to remove the upper a-arm bolt (which wasn't necessary). I called Chrysler but they weren't interested in my comments about this horrendous procedure. |

Was this tech looking for more work or had no clue where the lower ball joint was located? I don't know whether to laugh or cry looking at that picture. Maybe on his next job the tech will become a Wichita lineman! |

I'm afraid of what I would have done if I saw that when I was expecting a Ball Joint Repair! ------------------ |

The lower ball joint replacement went o.k., except the mechanic found the upper ball joint was bad on the driver's side. Chrysler doesn't supply the upper ball joint, you have to replace the upper A-arm assembly. (If there was a recall on the upper ball joint, I bet they would supply the ball joint by itself!) You'll notice on your Prowler, one of the two upper A-arm bolts cannot be removed without first removing the pushrod. The shock absorber, the bellcrank, and the anti-sway bar have to be disconnected in order to be able to rotate the pushrod out of the way of the upper A-arm bolt. The shop manual states to remove various pieces to gain access, and this is where the mechanic went totally ballistic. After the repair (which took 1 1/2 days), I showed the manager the three easily accessible bolts that didn't require removing any of the car body parts for access. The mechanic still maintains that all the parts had to be removed in order to protect the car from scratches! In fact, he said that all the same parts would have to be removed to replace the shock absorber. The manager said this is quite normal, but most customers don't get to see the work in progress. "How could I be upset, don't worry" he said. I called Chrysler to inform them their manual should be revised so some mechanic doesn't disassemble the entire front end to replace the shock absorber or upper A-arm, but Chrysler completely blew me off. I hope someone from Chrysler sees the pictures. I have about 20 pictures in all. Isn't it interesting how all of my parts were stored on another customer's Stratus, the floor, and the work bench? Did you notice the array of nuts, bolts, and tools on the lift? The mechanic had parts stashed away all over the place, and I doubt every nut, bolt, washer, or shim was replaced. I won't know unless I have a problem or disassemble the front end sometime in the future. |

How sad!!! At least he was thoughtful enough to put a shop rag between the brake caliper and the lower control arm. |
