Yellowstone 2006 sounded like fun and I think CJ originally did some research into it. I don't know if she is still working on it.
The west cost would be a great regional event, however, it would be a long haul for many on the east cost. A trip down Washington/Oregon Hwy 101 (coastal hwy)with some side trips to MT Rainer, MT Saint Helens, Crater Lake, the Lava flows in Oregon, The redwoods of N. California. Very beautiful country with lots to see and not too hot and minimal rain chance in late July, Aug and early Sept.
I would be happy to assist in planning an event, but I don't have the organizational skills to put together this type of event.

Being partial to San Diego, I would of course plug our fair city. However, being as far from everywhere as we can be, I have to agree with JD that participation will just not make it a "national" event. We can barely get a half dozen Prowlers together for local events, so I doubt it is in the cards.

I would like to nominate southern Arizona though. Route 66, Bisbee, Tombstone, Naco, Sierra Vista, Nogales, the Painted Desert. If you have never visited this part of the country, you owe it to yourself to go there someday. Heck, how would a couple dozen Prowlers look driving by the famous "tent city" prison?

At least there we would get some Texas and SoCal Prowlers in addition to the AZ and NM folks.

Second vote would be Reno/Tahoe. Much better destination than Vegas in my opinion.

MY vote is for VEGAS!!! start there for 3 days then go to Tahoe.

What better than a 100 Kats cruising under the lights.

Maybe plan it around SEMA ( I know a little late in the year for some) or HOT AUGUST NIGHTS?

I am sure if we contacted a car carrier company with 50 cars to ship from all over we could get a deal.

Yes, I had offerred to plan a Yellowstone event. Gary Meyers did a lot of research on hotels for me. Problems were they tend to be expensive and limited numbers. They also have to be booked at least a year ahead of time. Weather before June and after August can be iffy....which leaves the major tourist season to contend with. Also, I found (on their website) that there is a lot of road construction being done in the park which will carry well into 2006. According to my sister (who lives in Cheyenne) there is one major road in the park that is actually closed. I didn't feel that all-around, it was an ideal place for a Prowler event right now. If anyone else wanted to take this on, they can.

I had also suggested the southern Colorado area might be nice.....

CJ, sorry to hear Yellowstone is a no go, but thank you for your effort and all the others that looked into it. Reno/Vegas roadtrip idea sounds like fun, if there are other activities besides gambling for the group. Lots of hotels so no problem there. I would go, hope that doesn't keep others from attending.

Hot August nights dates for 2006 are already set - July 29 - August 6th so we would need to start in Las Vegas several days prior.

For the newer folks:
We have gone to the GRAND CANYON, COLORADO, SMOKY MTS, DEADWOOD, S.D., Toronto & TEXAS in the past 5 years. This year is The Dells, in Wisconsin.
When we visited the Grand Canyon, the group met in Laughlin, NV, which is on the California border. I would say MOST of the folks were from back East. Mike & Karen Gatlin, Bob & CJ, Phil Genet, Ed & Sandy, Jerry & Marcia, GPS John (and some others that I will think of as soon as I post this). We are from Mich, IN, OH, IL and drove to Cal. Southern California is a traffic nightmare unless you are out in the boonies. If you have not tried to co-ordinate 100 cars, you cannot believe how hard it is to keep them together. Northern CA., is probably a lot more realistic.
There have been a lot of trips WEST from here in the Midwest and that is not a complaint. I like it out west and parts of it are spectacular. I am not against planning on going west again, either.
The more central you can make it, the better participation you can expect. Fla would be great but no one is going to come from Cal. to Fla, probably. It is all about timing and how bad folks want to participate. If you have never seen 50 or 100 Prowlers in front of you, you are missing one of the 8 Wonders of the World. It is really a great sight to see.
I think we ought to try to combine Branson with Tulsa.
I would like to see an event farther north out West. The Pacific Northwest is great and the Canadian Rockies are awesome.
I would rather go to Reno than Vegas, which is just too hot.
This is a good thread, there are some opinions being expressed. That is what we need.

I admire you efforts Marty. But it ain't gonna happen. The POA is made up mostly of midwest, southern, and some eastern people. Would be nice for them to come experience some of the best cruisin weather, sites in the USA, but they wont go that far. Bunch of wusses....

Excuse me??? Seems to me that we went to Grand Canyon (thanks Ed), Colorado (helped plan and execute that one from Michigan) and Deadwood, SD. ....and just drove 3500 miles on the Power Tour.........

Depends on where in CA you're talking!! I love the West and would find a way to get there!!

Ed - only one small correction,,,,,,Laughlin, Nv borders with Arizona, not California,,,,but is real close.

You are right about Vegas in the summer months,,,too hot for most. It would have to fly in April/early May or late September/early October to be comfortable. It was just a thought. Some day I want to make it to New Castle, Indiana,,,,to watch paint dry.

I'd do another Colorado event,,,,,just change the routes and add the Pikes Peak Speedway to lap,,,south of Colo. Springs.

What about hotel availability outside of Yellowstone to base camp at??? Isn't Jackson, Wy 'outside' of Yellowstone Park?

Sasquatch, Jackson Hole is very upscale, I THINK and it is south of Yellowstone. East of Yellowstone is Cody, WY and that is a pretty cool town. West Yellowstone would not be able to host the group, too small.
We would cause quite a stir in Yellowstone, I am sure. Cody might be a good spot, but it has been about 10 years since I was there. Too far away for me to offer any inside tips.
I looked at Laughlin on the map. We drove to Lake Havasu (?) and into Cal. and it seemed like it was only about 15 minutes away, but that may not be correct. Havasu was about 45 minutes or an hour, it seemed.

Vegas is just Vegas, there is a large dam nearby, and Death Valley is a cool place. But you are in desert all around you.
Reno is getting run down I hate to say, at least the downtown casino part. The revenue is not there to keep up all the casinos. But it is growing residential and very pretty country around it.
Tahoe is way cool, as are all the mountains, trees, cruises around it. Very pretty country. And Reno is only 45 min away to go day visiting. Depending how long the event is, there is drags every Wed and Fri night in Sacramento. I am sure we could get a Prowler night there, they do Camaro, Firebird, Mustang nights, etc.

Hot August Nights= they won't let our cars do any authorized cruises or official shows, but that has never stopped us from having a blast there. Need to be careful of the wild bunch at night,(I'm talking about where you drive your car)

Ok I will try to go back to social class 101 and watch my manners. But I was only telling it like it is, watch how this thread turns out.

I missed the Colorado event, would be nice there. But I also would like to see Oregon, Washington too, besides Ft. Lewis that is.

John - other than you, it really doesn't look like most of the California people could care whether there is an event planned in the West or not. Not a peep of out anybody else from California. To be fair I just realized that some of them are on their way to Deadwood.

Maybe you're right about a lot of of people from the East not willing to drive that far. But I still think several dozen cars would make the trip. For me I would take I-80 through Wyoming and Northern Utah on the way out and come back on either I 70 or maybe even dip down and take a more southern route to get back east. The drive to & from would be a great part of the trip.

Marty - in all fairness,,,,many Ca. owners are packing and planning for their departure for the Deadwood event and may not have the time to think about this thread right now.

IMO,,,this thread will become more active in late August, after people return home from their summer vacations.

*******************************************************

I once asked about a Pacific Coast Highway [#1] cruise from north of San Diego to northern California. The main argument against it was that we would be staying in a different hotel room nearly every night. To me,,,,that isn't a problem. I did that run back in the 80's and it was truly an awesome adventure.

Larry - WAKE UP I know it's early out there but here's what I said in the post right above you.

"To be fair I just realized that some of them are on their way to Deadwood."

The words must have been echoing in your head while you were typing a reply. Have some coffee and then start planning a 2006 event in the West!

Gee Ed, I didn't realize how much older you are than me.......
I was there in 68 for basic (we didn't get out much, LoL), then in very early 71 for processing out from Nam and the Army.

So I have bad, and good memories..

Marty, I am not so much trying to push a event in this area as I am just pointing out California has many beautiful places for a event. We who live here are lucky enough to be pretty active in our Calif car clubs. We get to see these areas several times a year with our regional cruises. I was born in SF, and raised across the bay from it. Just sticking up for it I guess. It's not just a state with politics all the outsiders seem to hate, bad roads, and way to many life choices for them to be happy with. It's just like anywhere, when you live here you know where to go for whatever you like. With all the people that live in this area, I can still drive about 15 min and be completely alone on a mountain road with tall trees everywhere. Or drive 45 min and play in the ocean. Or go in the other direction and be flying down country roads as fast as I please. Or drive 1.5 hour test the car at the drags twice a week. California has a bad rap imo. It would be a blast to have a National event here, but I am realist in some ways, and would not be disappointed if it does not happen. I see this state every day.
Besides, half the fun of a event is driving to it IMO. And hopefully drive home too.

Ok, end of sermon.

No matter how I feel about all the other stuff, I can identify with this part of your post!

I guess I just sense a loss of momentum with POA and am afraid if we don't plan "SOMETHING" it not happen and things will change somehow. I have always thought it would be cool to have an event in the West so we could meet more of the West Coast people. Meeting people at an event makes them "real people" instead of words on web page.

If a POA event isn't going to happen in the West then I wil commit to the hot rodders Northwest Tour (Radid City to Seattle) in late August next year.

Also - Gary Archer & I have discussed hosting a regional event in Louisville tentatively next May but will wait and see what developes out West or elsewhere before we decide to do anything. Another possibily would be during NSRA Street Rod Nationals in August. We don't want to schedule to close to other POA events or Woodward.

I hope this thread doesn't die and we can get some good input from others OR just plan a Tahoe/Sacramento/Wine Country event and see who shows up

If there is a lot of interest in the Pacific NW, I will talk with others in the NW Prowler group and see if I can get some help planning and event. Stay a couple days touring areas of Washington a couple in Oregon and even some in N. Calif.. We could hit the coastal hwy, cruise the mountains, visit an active volcano, see massive past lava flows, visit a lake that was once one of the largest volcanos in N. America (until it exploded and became crater lake), cruise through some of the bigest trees in america (Redwoods) and any other points of interest this group is interested in viewing. To ensure good weather, look at late August in the Pacific NW. One problem would be its a long drive for the east coast folks, though it is a beautiful drive.

I would vote for the northern trip. So Cal. is just too densely populated to try to keep a group moving together on the road. Too much gridlock the few times I have been there.
Oregon, WA, and N. Cal would be a great trip especially with a year lead time so everyone can get their schedules lined up.
We need to look back at a couple of the threads where some of this was discussed to see good and bad points that were brought up, previously.

John........I knew you were baiting me......couldn't let you down, could I??? Tahoe is a beautiful area....I haven't spent a lot of time in CA, but have visited/camped some of the national parks in CA when we lived in CO. If I thought the event was somewhere that I wanted to visit, I would do my darndest to get there.......no matter where it is.

A/C..........we did check into the Jackson Hole area...and it is even more expensive than Yellowstone is.

I can't believe this thread is about to disappear off the page. I was sure hoping someone would jump in to plan something for 2006 or at least have choices to discuss while a lot of people are together at the Dell's.
