Tomorrow I will be taking my Prowler in for the recall on the ball joints. The car is an 02 and has never had the recall done. I had the vin# run by the dealership and it was on the list to need the recall. My fears are many but I hope to have this done with NO damage to the car. I will give them the once over when I get there. Center caps, door opening, low clearance and anything else I can think of. I hope they don't mess something up. One good thing is our company has done business with them and I know the owner personally. I hope I don't have to play that card!! |

Buy some 3M Blue tape and wrap all the parts before they do the recall. This will protect the finish of the parts. Good luck. |

Got the car back in one piece. Even had them change the oil in it and the engine is still under the hood. (it does have a four cylinder in it right??) Just kidding. No scratches center caps not broken overall a pretty good day. |

Check the threads on the oil pan. First time I had mine serviced they stripped the threads cause you have an aluminum pan with a steel plug......... |

Glad to hear it, Hog. My '99 hadn't been done either when I got it last June - gritted my teeth when I brought it in to my local mini-van - oops, I mean Chrysler dealer, but I had no issues either. (I put a note right on the steering wheel: "Please remember nose is very low and sticks out in front of bumpers.") You probably should have had the air cleaner replaced while in there - that's a real joy, even from under the car. |

Brought my new to me 02 to the local Chrysler dealer last Friday to have the ball joint recall done. I dropped the car off at 7:30 and was told it would be ready to be picked up by late morning. I called at noon and was told it would be ready at 2:00. I called at 2:00 and was told it would be ready at 4:00. I was dropped off at 4:00 and waited until 5:45 for them to finish working on the car. I never got a satisfactory explanation as to why it took so long. I sort of had the feeling they weren't telling me something. They also changed the oil and installed a new tire sensor/valve stem. Anyhow when I finally did get the car they brought me both of the center caps from the front wheels. They both had broken tabs and would not stay on. The dealer told me that is how they found them which is entirely possible since I had just purchased the car and had not removed or checked them. In fairness to them one looked like it had been held on with silicone! I ordered two new hubs. I guess I need to check the rears. I'm still not sure what took them so long but I just have this feeling they did not tell me everything. When I brought the car there for service they said they could not recall the last time they worked on a Prowler. That did not give me a warm fuzzy feeling! While shopping Prowlers I was amazed at how many had the open ball joint recall. Is this because owners were nervous about having the dealers work on the cars? Frank |

Frank - I had the same question in my mind; mine's a '99, had 7600 miles on it and was beautifully taken care of - so in ten years why didn't the original owner get the ball joints done, especially since it was a real safety issue? In fact, I knew about the open recall before I bought it last June (showed right up on Carfax), and I actually used that as ammunition to get the price down at the dealer ("Chrysler's in bankruptcy - how do I even know they'll do it at all", blah, blah, blah). Then I white-knuckled it all the way home from the dealer (90 miles) figuring with my luck it's gonna collapse any minute. |

Sorry to hear that you had trouble with your dealer. I know the service writer as well as the owner and general manager. Before I took the car in I asked questions, knowing that the my car was 7 years old and apretty rare car at that. So I told the service guy that I wanted to go over a few things before I left the car. When I started to talk about the center caps he stopped me and said oh those are really fragile. They are plastic and you need to be careful with those. He was familiar with all the little things with the car and said that the guy he would put on the car has been here a long time. I asked him if the car would be ready today and he said he would call. At 2:30 I got the car and it was done. I was shocked So there you have it, a story of one prowler that went to the dealership and returned back to the owner without being damaged or any problems. I agree! Cancel your order with the dealer and contact Ed Monahan here on the POA....His friends fix is far better than the original design. Buying new ones just means they will fail again in the future since no change has ever been made to the original poorly designed caps.... |

or forget the plastic center caps and put billet spinners on your wheels, one of the best mods IMO |

The center caps came in Tuesday and I have them. Actually I was aware that the old ones could be repaired and improved (better than new) by Ed's friend but I thought it would be nice to have a couple of extras. I will be contacting Ed and sending off the 4 center caps that came on the car for repair/modification as soon as I put the car in storage in about two weeks. I have a question about the center caps but I will post in the technical section rather than completely hijack Hogzilla's thread. Thanks to everyone for the tips on getting the center caps repaired. quote: I thought I would resurrect this old thread to ask a question. The Prowler tech at my local Chrysler dealership was inspecting my car and stripped out the threads on the aluminum oil pan. Service advisor tells me this is a common thing with Prowlers and all 3.5 L engines. He went on to say that eventually the pan threads would inevitably strip and would have to be to replaced with a $600+ reinforced unit to Chrysler made later. I am expected to pay for this. I'm surprised NOT to read more about this "common problem" on the POA website. Thoughts on this? This message has been edited by drbutton on 03-11-2016 at 01:03 AM |

I've heard of this situation, but not involving a Prowler 3.5L engine. Check with a NAPA or CARQUEST parts store.....believe they offer a self-threading, over-size, new oil pan plug that will put you back on the road? I'd guess the oil change jockey at that dealership screwed up the threads on your plug? Is the tech really a Prowler tech? Sounds more like they were recently promoted from the wash rack area? |

What they said might be true if you did it, but they did it. I say they are responsible and would insist they fix it. |

quote: These are very good questions. What I was told, was that the mechanic who normally works on my prowler and other prowlers in the community was the one who stripped the threads. Now, that doesn't mean he's a "Prowler tech", per se. I guess my question would be exactly what is a "prowler tech"? Maybe it's time I found one. Note, part of the irony here is that I was not actually having the oil changed. |

So how do they know the plug is stripped? Did you have a oil leak. Sounds like they are trying to get some work from you. |

To replace the oil pan I would imagine the engine would have to be pulled but there are some alternative fixes that are simple and that work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnP1HQkq70s This message has been edited by padroo on 03-11-2016 at 10:09 AM |

I had the car at my dad's house, and there were oil or fluid spots where it had been parked. Now I believe was my brother's ancient Honda Civic that was leaking on his driveway, but I didn't know that at the time. I actually asked the dealership to look under there for any leaks. I was already scheduled at the dealership to put in the Tom Mills window regulators. |

There is no way in hell I would pay for that, especially at $ 600. They screwed it up and it is NOT a common problem. I have changed my oil in all of mine and never had a problem. Someone is really a poor mechanic if they can't even handle an oil pan plug. |
