I had the 99 Red painted very early on. Sold that car but liked the looks of the painted bumpers.
Had the Candy bumpers painted and then had the front end chromed. I decided fairly quickly that it was not a good combination so I removed the front bumpers.

That's what I keep hearing but I was referring to Bob's post where it seems he indicates differently... At least indicating that a collision to the front bumpers will trigger the airbags...

We wouldn't want the facts to get in the way here. The fact is that Prowler was designed with bumpers to meet Federal Crash Standards. The front bumpers have an aluminum substructure bolted to the frame. Typically, the bumpers are the first point of impact in a frontal collision. The impact signal they send triggers the air bags. Yes, impacting other areas of the car will trigger the bags, but timing is off and the bags deploy late, not as designed.

The time and distance traveled difference between impacting the bumper and driving the flexible front wheel structure rearward can make a critical difference in the bags deploying when needed. Crash events happen in milliseconds.

it must be a frontal collision not from the side ,frt only.the sensors are located at the very frt of the frame area, and have enough inertia to set off the sensors.it also must be straight frontal.one side or the other will not do it.

The sensor is on the frame. The bumpers and anything attached to it send the impact vibration that the sensor picks up. It is not mechanical like a button or exposed switch. It is a device that monitors for a distinct signature. It has to ignore large pot holes, curb bumps and other small impacts. We've actually bent a wheel, both in Tulsa and Detroit hitting huge pot holes and never set the bags off.

I told you all not to let the facts get in the way of a good opinion. Let's see, will the Fed's take an opinion when certifying a vehicle for operation on the road? Now, wonder why the Kevlar straps are on the side frame rails attached to the body tub or the magnesium cross car bean is behind the dash? Oh, who sat through the slow-mo videos of Prowler front, rear and side verification crashes? All the development and testing was done to ensure the safest possible car for your protection. Just like seat belts, it's your choice to wear them or not.

People will do what they want to to their cars. That's their freedom. Just don't confuse preference and opinion with the facts.

When I got my car the picnic benches on both ends had mysteriously fallen off so I was inclined to protect myself and add bumpers. I am thankful Real Rod produced these.

My $ .02; we own a 97 & the gray bumpers just don't get it. I was faced with the same decision as you. I also know the kind of luck I have had (or not had as the cse may be) if I were to remove the bumpers. I chose to paint them the color of the car. Not only do they blend in, they're no where near as noticeable as before. I'm glad I chose this option. I also agree with the post about checking with your insurance company. Still worthy of consideration would be to understand that a front end collision without bumpers would severely circumvent the operation of the air bags. RPL can explain it much better than I.
