My Prowler should be here in a few days. I know this is a subjective question, but what is the preference on keeping the front bumpers or taking them off.Just kind of interested on the voting. |

Before concerning yourself with public opinion, you may want to check with your insurance company. Some will not cover your car if you remove the front bumpers, others will not cover damages if you do because they will tell you damage was more extensive that it would have been had you still had the bumpers on your car. I believe I remember an owner here in So. Cal. telling me AAA was one company that wouldn't cover if the bumpers were removed, don't know that for a fact but I was told that by an an owner who has AAA. Congrats on the Kat, enjoy it and have fun this summer. By the way the bumpers were off the purple Kat we just traded and the bumpers are off the candy kat we still have. |

I VOTE OFF mine have been off since sometime in 1999. Once I talked Tom Mills into producing the kit he had made for his Yellow Prowler Love the look, hooks up just like factory and looks as if it came from the factory. He paints them before shipping so they are ready to install. He even has a rear pan that is designed to remove the rear bumpers too. Check out Jefferson Auto/Tom Mills for more info ------------------ |

Like a tennis match, opinions will bounce back and forth on this one. I like the factory "designed" look with the bumpers on ... and on certain colors, that version is enhanced by painting them to match the car. The look without bumpers reminds me on the nose of an Indy car, which is cool too ... but then I go back to the "traditional look". The nice thing about that mod - you can always return it to original, or even, one month on, one month off! |

In the State of California you are required to have your front bumpers. I do not know any of our group that has ever had a ticket for missing front bumpers. Most of us have collector car insurance, which does not care if you have the front bumpers on your car. Go to my web site at www.prowlerproducts.com and check out what I have to offer. Also try and get together with us on one of our tech days and cruises. I hope to meet and see you in the near future. ------------------ |

Do you really think the average insurance adjuster would even know if they had bumpers? Car is 9-13 years old now! I would keep my mouth shut and just insure it. |

I've seen pictures of Kats with the bumpers painted body color and they look great and I've also seen photos with 'em off completely and they look great too. Me? I'm going to remove mine and paint 'em body color and if I'm not satisfied I'll remove them completely. ------------------ |

I prefer them on. I changed my 99 Black bumpers (grey) to the 2000 black bumpers. My Candy has painted bumpers. The Kid Car has no bumpers. Not my choice. Custom car that already had them removed. |

We wouldn't want the facts to get in the way here. The fact is that Prowler was designed with bumpers to meet Federal Crash Standards. The front bumpers have an aluminum substructure bolted to the frame. Typically, the bumpers are the first point of impact in a frontal collision. The impact signal they send triggers the air bags. Yes, impacting other areas of the car will trigger the bags, but timing is off and the bags deploy late, not as designed. The time and distance traveled difference between impacting the bumper and driving the flexible front wheel structure rearward can make a critical difference in the bags deploying when needed. Crash events happen in milliseconds. I've seen the development and work that went into making our cars as safe as they can be. Today manufacturers have made even greater gains in safety. Let's see, would I want to be in a Prowler in the event of a severe accident or that hand built '34 Ford Hot Rod? |

Bob, I assume you work or worked for Chrysler. I never thought about air bag deployment before. With the bumpers on it looks like a chromed suspension would be a waste of money. |

I retired from Chrysler. I was on the Prowler Team from before the car was approved for production until we made the decision to cancel production. It was at that meeting that I committed to purchase the first Deep Candy Red car for CJ. |

I know someone that was pulling out to make a left turn when cross traffic clipped the right front bumper hard enough to push the outside corner toward the wheel about an inch. (You couldn't really tell it was hit at all except for a scrape on the bumper and comparing how close to the tires both bumpers were.) No airbag deployment took place. Does that mean they should have their airbag checked? |

^^^ You can see the damage near the section close to where it mounts to the frame. Both sides cracked,,,,the weld on the left side split (hard to see in picture)[if you enlarge to 150% magnification, you can see the weld crack better]
I replaced that front bumper, and skinned it to see the inside damage, since I knew it was structurally bent somewhat. I was surprised at how weak it was considering it was a 2/3 mph love tap that I seen. IMO, only, I see no advantage to leaving them on, they are terribly weak,,, but thats my personal choice. Others can disagree,,,,,thats their option, and I have no problem with that. This message has been edited by ALLEY CAT on 06-06-2011 at 01:41 PM |
