Do you consider yourself as a car collector? Does having a bunch of cars make you a car collector?

There's probably a lot of possible interpretations of that.

If you have one special car and collect all the memorabilia and parts etc associated with that car, then I think you would be one. JMO

But typically a collection would be than a couple or more than you need for transportation.

If you collect a couple, flip them and collect a couple more and so on, you might be a collector.

I normally refer to myself as a car guy. I usually keep my cars for a long time, even my daily drivers. I have had 8 or more cars at the same time for the last 20 years. I think if you have some special cars or cars you don't drive, your more of a collector.

I am and I am not. I only own the Prowler but over the years I have owned many collector cars. But rarely more than one at a time. I have tons of Prowler memorabilia . I also have a collection of over 300 diecast model cars. If I had the financial means I would own multiple cars.

...as a young guy I wanted a Corvette and I purchased my first "collector car" in 1975, it was a red 1961 Corvette (probably watched too much "Route 66" on TV), sold it a few months later and made money...bought a fully restored 1962 Corvette, sold it shortly after and made a lot of money, I was hooked
...for many years I used the purchase and sale of collector cars to fund the cars I wanted to keep long term, I have finally acquired most of the cars I dreamed of as a young man and have owned as many as 39 cars at a time, I am currently down to about 35-36 cars...my garage is a little over 16,000 sq ft., filled with cars I don't really want to sell, but at a time, they will start to trickle out, probably gonna market a few this next year or so...yes, I am a car collector

Larry, you were at the top of my list when I thought of this.
I never considered myself a car collector just a guy with a bunch of cars. My wife gets attached to them and we should get rid of some of the newer ones just because we don't drive them enough. We have done Prowler events in recent years but very seldom go into new car showrooms or car shows.

I do not consider myself to be a Car Collector but a car enthusiast or even a caraholic.

At the moment I own five vehicles, four of which are currently tagged insured and on the road. Two of these could be considered "Collector Cars" (Corvair & Prowler) while the other three are simply transportation or utility type vehicles (S-10, Astro Van,& Focus)

Yes Jim Sutton...You are definitely a "Car Guy!" With all due respect to Padroo"s thread, I'd like to slightly change the question...what exactly classifies the Prowler as a "collector's car?"
I will post the reason I ask after a few responses.

...I believe they are a "collectors car" already, even with the relatively high production numbers...the Prowler was an important car for several reasons, concept, production, materials, but to me the most important factor was that it seemed to spawn the entire Retro Styling car phenom...would we have the Camaro, Mustang, Challenger or even the ill fated T-Bird among others without the Prowler, who knows

...although they seem to be behind other recent "collector cars" in terms of appreciation, I feel it is due to the fact there were over 11,000 built...many cars of the Muscle Car era were bringing twice MSRP at the 10 year point, many bringing 10 times MSRP at the 20 year mark and some 100 to 200 times MSRP at the 40 year mark, etc....in comparison, the Prowler has fallen far behind as they are approaching the 20 year mark and would struggle to sell for MSRP on a regular basis

...some day when we least expect it, we will see them advertised in Hemmings, on Ebay etc for $50K, $75K and on for nice low mile stock examples, but don't count your money yet...my bet, many of the official Prowler accessories (and some after market) will sky rocket in price, original tires will bring big $$$... replacement body parts will never be reproduced driving restoration costs into orbit

...again, just my opinion from dealing in collector cars for a very long time

Having bought and sold over 100 cars & trucks and having 6 cars and a truck titled and insured for just Sue and I maybe I'm a collector.

Had a lot of collector cars when they were drivers. Never have made much money off my cars but a little. The Prowler is something we wanted from the 1st time we seen pictures of it. And really glad we were able to purchase it not for the car but for the friendship it created this is something that doesn't happen with most cars

Still on my list is a 61 Vette, have given thought to selling the 74 Coupe deVille, 81 Imperial and my Dart. Would still like to clone my brothers 1969 383 auto Dart GTS that was white, white interios and red stripe.

I still love the old cars, but getting to the point with what life has dealt time to let go of cars and STUFF. Boxed up toys, living room looking like museum (neighbors discription ) or a Cracker Barrel

Always envisioned a place to display the cars and stuff think I'm over that....... LOL

Hard one to technically answer, but I would say if someone owns at least one collectable car they would be considered a collector. When I bought the Prowler, I bought it to drive it. So looking at it a different way, if you own 1 collectable car and drive it often, does it still make you a collector? I guess it is left to a opinion.

The reason I ask...several years ago I followed a bud in his 1935 Roll Royce to the Friday night car gathering at the local Hardee's in this medium size town. After looking at several 50s & 60s mussel cars, some antiques, some vettes & mustangs, I was back in the Kat preparing to leave. Before I started up, a 300 pound woman comes over asked me why I thought I should be there and the Prowler is definitely not a "collector's car." Rather than argue with her I simply said everyone has an opinion and left. I did not give her allot of credence; however, I have read of several other similar accounts on this forum. Anyone care to elaborate?

Obviously, she was too large to fit in the Prowler, hence her negative comment. LOL.

Did she say "collector car" or "classic car"? Most wouldn't class the prowler as a "classic" car. Classic are usually 25 years or older.

But at cruise nights, anything goes. Car shows are a different story.

The 300 lb. woman wasn't there because of the cars she was there because it was Hardee's. lol

Just like everything else, everyone has an opinion. It doesn't matter if someone else thinks you are collector, and everyone has their own definition of a collector so there is no one correct answer.
I really don't care if anyone else in the world thinks I am a car collector or not. Some folks think someone with two cars is a collector. I don't think of myself as a collector.
The look on little kids' and old folks' faces lets me know if I have a cool car or two. I don't need the re-assurance of some "expert". The Prowlers actually got booed in Pontiac, MI at one of the early Woodward Cruises. It would be interesting to see what they drove or maybe they worked at GM or Ford and were booing Plymouth (Chrysler) products. Maybe jealousy. Who knows.
Again, other folks opinions don't sway me or persuade me.

I believe if you own a couple of cars ( or more), that were purchased to use as Sunday drivers on fair weather days only, or just sit in your garage to admire....than you are a collector....some have BIG collections...some have small.....but they are collections.

I have never considered myself a real car collector. I have never bought a car and said I need that one for my collection but I do have nine and only one gets driven at the moment. I retired in June of 2014 and I worked so much overtime I didn't have time to really maintain our cars. My wife has been the chief caregiver all these years and I have fallen behind on some of my maintenance and hope to start catching up this year.

I do all the mechanical stuff but she is the keeper of the cars.

...I have never personally encountered any negativity at shows with a Prowler, but deep down I know many of the so called "real hot rodders" despised them...our cars were available by writing a check, not spending evenings and weekends building it by hand in our own garage...and the Prowler attracted a crowd

...the most negativity I ever encountered at car shows, local events, was with the "Winged Warriors", the Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbirds...no one liked the looks, knew what they were, had ever seen one or understood why they even existed...things are different today, 35 years later, but showing up at a show in 1980 with a "Monkey Puke Green" car with a giant wing and a Corvette nose was setting yourself up for a day of classy comments

1980...pix from the very first car show I ever attended...I only noticed a couple of years ago the guy standing in the pix on the right was my dad, he took a car to the show too, a 69 Chevy convertible (parked behind my Daytona)

I'm I guess someone different. I don't look as my Prowler as an investment. I have owned corvettes, porsche, and a few other cars, with my limited time I don't look at them as an investment. I try to get the best price possible an enjoy the car. I have never lost money on doing things this way. I bought my Prowler just over a year ago and have invested about 2500.00 in after market stuff, lambo doors, same color rear bumpers, air patrol, and a few more items. i bought this car to enjoy and feel i have no problem of getting what I have into it, at some point. Im not one to let something sit in the garage to earn a few extra bucks. I want to enjoy what I bought, just my two cents

I'm down to three collector cars: 70 Road Runner; 87 GNX and my 02 PROWLER. I truly see the Prowler as a future collectible. Its limited numbers, looks and performance assure it as such.

Although I'm on a way, way minor scale compared to "Tangled Up In Blue" (who himself would be on a minor scale compared to Jay Leno), I consider myself a car collector.

I also collect car memorabilia and watch practically every movie or tv show that has a classic car featured. I attend many car related events and go to many car museums when I travel around the country.

For those who are CONSTANTLY looking at their watches or calenders waiting for the Prowlers to be declared classic cars, I say: RELAX ITS COMING. Cars can be declared classic/collector items almost immediately such as the Ford GT or it can take awhile, such as the 70s Trans Ams which are only recently going for a minimum of three times their original prices.

Like the tv show says, "I'M CAR CRAZY!!".
