Here's a new one. ( I did a search here on POA and did not find any info on this subject)

Recently, upon inspection under the back end of my 01 Prowler (w 29k miles) I noticed that axle grease from the rear axle INNER CV Boot on the Passenger Side had sprayed up on to the frame as well as the tail pipe below. It was not an insignificant amount of grease and I was worried.

Many shops that claim that they repair these problems simply want to replace the Half Shaft Assembly and NOT replace the boots themselves. I can only assume that Chrysler Dealers would be the same. ( I did not discuss this with any Dealer yet)

So I researched this area of our cars and here is what I found out.....

BOTH Prowler Rear Axle Half-Shafts have been DISCONTINUED from Mopar.

Passenger Side Half Shaft Assembly - Mopar P/N 04882522AC

Drivers Side Half Shaft Assembly - Mopar P/N 04882521AC

MOPAR Boot Kits ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

Inner Boot Kit - Mopar P/N 4728262

Outer Boot Kit - Mopar P/N 4863722

So I ordered the Inner Boot Kit from Moparpartsgiant and inside the box you get the Boot, 2 Clamps, and 1 C ring, plus instructions for replacing the Inner Boot. No axle grease package is included. (not a big deal, I suppose, since axle grease could be sourced elsewhere).

The box I received had a date of 2007 on it as well as the correct P/N. The Instructions for replacing the Inner Boot were also included. However, the Boot itself was Plastic and not Silicone Rubber.

(Perhaps it's just a packaging error with the box I received.)

Here's why that is significant;

The 2001 Service Manual for a 2001 300M CLEARLY states that "the Inner Boot is Silicone Rubber and the Outer Boot is Hytrel Plastic". (It's in the Description Section for the Half-Shaft).

For the 300M, the Inner Boot Kit is Mopar P/N 4728261, The outer Boot Kit is the same... Mopar P/N 4863722. That Manual even states that a "small" amount of grease escaping for the inner seal should not be considered cause for replacing the Boot.

In the 2001 Service Manual for the Prowler THAT descriptive sentence was omitted! (ODD!)

My local repair shop was willing to replace the boot if required but the Boot I provided was not the correct one. (Plastic and not Silicone Rubber). They were , however, able to tighten the existing large Clamp on the existing Boot (1 notch) and after a long trip this weekend it appears that my leak is fixed FOR NOW.

If anyone else has some insights regarding how similar (or not) the Prowler Half Shafts are to the 300M please provide some additional detail.

300M Half Shafts can still be ordered, although Mopar shows them as discontinued. On Rockauto I see Brands like Cardone, Surtrack, and APWI with some of the pictures showing w/ABS and w/o ABS. The ones without ABS would most likely have the best chance of being similar.

Maybe the components can be used to create a Prowler Half Shaft if required?

I fear that this area is a future problem for our cars since the parts are going to be difficult to source.

So just something else to inspect when you get a chance.

Hope this helps someone down the road.

Hi, and YES, tightening the clamp did resolve the small leak I was having. I didn't do the work. A local shop was able to do it with the proper tool. So far so good.
This prompted my search for a solution as noted above.

There are two threads on this subject. Check both for info.

My post from other thread......

This is where I purchased CV boots. Listing says no longer available, but scroll down to listing and contact seller. He may be able to get them for you. Made by EMPI.
There are also listing shown for inners that have only 3 convulsions vs 5 or 6 on Prowler. I would not recommend them as they are not as flexible. In a pinch they may work.

What's wrong with your current boot?

I see you gave diameter measurements. Do you know the circumference of the clamps to use?
