Oh my that is a nightmare!!!! Honestly I think he's got his sh*t together now. As I said I have known him since I am 13 and we had a heart to heart talk for a few hours. I am top of the list now from what I am told. End of August is more than enough time. I think if I was in your shoes and being dodged like that I would wait outside that shop and give that guy the beating of his life!! I give you credit for doing it right, I couldn't have. Wish me luck and if anyones got room in thier prayers!!?!? Thanks.

The relationship I have at the shop my Van is being worked on has deteriorated some in the past eighteen months.
When it went in, my expectation was six months max and under 10K.
I am way over that mark just in mechanical work and the body and paint work may come close to that too.
Best case scenario now is to actually get it back in one piece and running, hopefully by the end of the year.

That is so very true. Repair, vs restore becomes an issue when working with places that do both. I've been working with my body guy for 28 years. My car sat and sat and sat. The father, a craftsman, the son, taking over the business, a businessman. My cost quadrupled over the 18 months it was there, but was still about 1/3rd what these people are charging. Got the car back after I had a " heart to heart". Body work is good, could have been better and could have been blocked better. The paint is exceptional, very good. These big cars are hard. Most people think this is a number 1 car. Its gorgeous. BUT those of us that have been doing this for a while, we know. Good luck. I tried my best NOT to upset them as my car sat there unassembled, unpainted and apart. Was a very stressful time.

Had a good talk yesterday (if you want to call it that). I actually got loud in front of his crew. 2 options car done by the end of August or I am going to get my trailer and I will pull it out right now, I actually started moving things around the shop like I was making room to get my trailer in. I was in rare form to say the least. Hes got a new guy there who I rattled a bit with my behavior. He followed me out to my car when I left and apologized for Jeff and said he will make sure it gets done. I am the nicest guy you'll ever meet. I hate that it has come to this. The car has been in the body shop for more than half the time I have owned it!!!

Chris,
I have some understanding regarding what you are going through because I am going through something similar.

When I bought my Corvair Greenbrier van back in December 2020, I was excited and anxious to get it on the road reliable and presentable sooner than later.

With this in mind, I elected to farm out the work rather than take on the project myself.

My expectation was to have it completed and on the road before the West Virginia event in September 2021.

Once the mechanical work was done, getting it scheduled into the body shop was looking doubtful but eventually it got there AFTER I stripped it to bare metal myself since that was the only way the body man / painter would accept the job and stand behind his work.

My next expectation was to have it completed before the July 2022 Carlisle event.

Stripping the paint took longer than I anticipated since I did 90% of the work myself. I started in early April 2022 and finished by mid June 2022.

The van has been in the body shop for about six or seven weeks now and MAYBE could see paint this week but I am not holding my breath.

My expectation now is simply that someday I actually get the van back. The initial budget I had for it has long since been exceeded and will be close to double what I anticipated.

The time line has been triple what I expected and I can only hope that after all this, I will be happy enough with the finished product that it justifies the cost and aggravation.

As times, I have been ready to pull the van out of the shop and take it somewhere else but it would be difficult to find someone willing to take on something that is halfway done.

The other thing is if there were issues, the finger pointing would begin saying the other shop made the errors bla bla bla...

Rather than piss off the shop owners, I have elected to be patient but am also doubtful they will get another big job from me.

When it is all said and done, the opinion I have of the initial shop will have suffered. So far the body shop is doing OK, slow but steady so I again am trying to be patient and understanding.

I have been paying the shops during the process so they can pay their expenses for parts and labor but wonder if they would get upset if it took me as long to finish paying them as it did for the work to get done, especially if I managed to get the vehicle back before the final payment has been rendered.

Hi Chris, It has literally cost you blood sweat and tears and it has been accompanied by the well-known pitfalls but in the end it looks like it is all coming together. Looks great and good call to install the control freaks. Make sure you do a 4 wheel laser alignment afterwards to avoid damaging you precious rears.

Would be nice to see it next to the High Boy of Steve in one of the POA events.

Best, Kees

Chris with 39,000+ miles on the paint job it has held up well but not what it use to be, but each scar is history and shows it has been driven

What are the wheel and tire sizes you are running front and rear?
Can't see the size in the pics. Are they 18s" or 20s" ?
Wheels and tires that wide are harder to find, do you have recommendation on
where to buy?

18 x 7 up front w/ a 28 x8-18 tire and 20 x 15 wheel w/ a 29 x 18-20 rear tire. http://www.ronsrims1.com/
Custom built. Please don't ask for offsets etc. I wouldn't want anyone to order what I did and it doesn't work. I measured everything for the look/stance I wanted fronts will never work with fenders because of how I laid mine out. Way too expensive for me to want to be part of a screw up. Call Ron he'll hook you up. Took about 6 weeks to make.

Went to the shop beyond pissed......had a very very long talk with Jeff and reminded him of our history. This guy and I have done some insane things together over the 30 years we've been friends. I reminded him how when I go to FL theres a good chance I'll never see him again. Is this how you want it to end I asked? Told him I felt like he was not my old friend i used to have and was quite disapointed. At the end of the day I think it all set in and now we're good.
This is a pretty unique build, I hope you get down to FL and see it in person next year. I molded aluminum panels the same profile and we glassed em to the inside of the seam. Little more glass on top to feather it all in. I always had this plan. The reason I cut the bottom off is so I can still get to my tranny when she's all 1 piece.
