Before I had a missfire code in the #4 cylinder I would get about 220 miles to a tank.

While trying to find out the misfire problem I replaced the #4 ignition coil, #4 fuel nozzle, and all spark plugs. Also replaced PCV valve. Ultimately the PCM had bad coil inside it and that cause the misfire. Since then I get about 150 miles to the tank.

Do you think one of the above parts is causing poor gas mileage or did I inherit a new problem? The above parts were ordered from Rock auto. I have checked all my connections multiple times since the repair and all the hoses are connected. The car performs just fine and have gotten code 414 twice. (Coded 414 is an evap code)

I have been tempted to by an automotive smoke machine to look for any cracked lines. I know the car is 24 years old and hoses can rot away but where to look can be difficult.

Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts?

Was you low gas mileage on just one tank of gas? I would do another tank and compare. I wouldn't think the evap code would have much to do with bad gas mileage. Let us know what you find out. This is the time of year when refineries switch from summer blends to winter, I don't know how that actually affects gas mileage.

I filled up with gas this afternoon. Here is a pic of the fuel level before fill up and I put in 9.7 gallons of fuel. I put premium in. I have also ran a bottle of fuel system cleaner.

I don't know what could cause such an increase in fuel consumption without triggering a code such as rich mixture.
Might take a look at the engine oil and see if the level has gone up and/or if it has an unusually strong gasoline smell to it.
Use a fuel pressure tester to see if the system is holding pressure for a reasonable length of time with the engine off.

I'm no expert troubleshooter, but those are some things I'd look at.

I would check the MPG. Your gauge might be screwed up. All four of mine register what is in the tank differently. I have run out of gas twice in the 99 since it registers differently of what is showing on the gauge.

Curious are you buying fuel from same station?

If you are buying higher ethanol % of fuel or winter blend that can effect your gas mileage

On the road my 99 has gotten 20-22 mpg, around town 16-18 mpg

So the mileage you are getting is very similar to what I have gotten in the 43,000 miles I have put on my car

I understand you feel a big difference, but a lot of factors we don’t know

Where you are buying fuel

Where are you driving

Type of driving

If it is apples to apples comparison then yes sounds like you could have a change

Filled up my 2001 recently & in the 500+ miles I have put on it since getting it & checking mileage since gas gauge is different than my 99. Had been getting high 14 to low 16 mpg…… but last tank showed in 12’s

Tried to think of reason it might have changed that much. Hasn’t idled long periods, didn’t drive any different than before, so next spring will see what kind of mileage I get. But when it gets to 1/4 tank in 99 or 1/8 tank in 01 I buy gas

I usually get 22-25 mpg when mostly all highway. Around town 17-20 mpg, if you were getting 20-22 all the time you were doing good. The winter blend of gas will drop it 1-2 mpg. Did you recently install performance gears? Gears could drop it 1-2 mpg also. I save my receipt when I get gas so I can check my mileage and know when I last got gas. The last one for 99 was 18.0 mpg, the 01 was 23.2 mpg, it just depends on where I went. Like Ed said it doesn't matter where your gas gauge is, it's how many miles on your trip odometer, divided by gallons it took to fill up.

I don’t know if this is appropriate in this discussion but this reminds me of a story I heard. Whether it’s truth or fiction it’s a good story. When Volkswagen first arrived in the USA a guy purchased one. His friends and neighbors got tired of him bragging about his fuel mileage. So each night they started adding gas to his tank. The bragging of course increased exponentially. This went on for a week or so. Then they began taking fuel out every night. The bragging turned to complaining, confusion and frustration . They finally told him what they were doing before he went off the deep end.
