Rare Parts has caused me quite a dilemma and I need anyone’s thoughts as to my idea…. 1st, the lower ball joints pressed in perfectly and appear to be spot-on… However, the uppers have been a nightmare… 1st package I opened looked just fine until I pressed it in (It went in super super super easy with zero torque or effort) My immediate thought was something is wrong so I opened package #2 to view a completely different ball joint… checked the packages and the part number was correct on each and also verified the stamped part # on each ball joint which was identical yet I had 2 different ball joints … I called Rare Parts and they agreed that something is a miss and asked for them back… Replacements arrived today and they are both identical and newly made in May of this year. The 1st pressed in perfectly as a ball joint should so I was relieved until I began to torque the castle nut down to spec… The castle nut goes FAR past the hole for the cotter pin which renders the castle nut useless…. Putting aside my current anger, and my worry to uninstall again as I do not want compromise the upper A-arm with a 3rd install into aluminum, my idea is to substitute the castle nut for a class 10 flange lock nut (like the original OEM nuts used on the ball joints). So my question is, do you feel the change out to a different lock nut is suitable for the fix here….? Your opinion is greatly appreciated…. GREATLY Appreciated!!! Thanks Rich |

I wouldn’t do anything unless Rare Parts says you can. I don’t know why the hole would be in the wrong spot for the cotter pin!?!?! Could you possibly post a picture? Honestly if it was my car I’d send em back and get the right parts. If the chrome gets damaged it should be Rare Parts problem because they sent you the wrong parts TWICE. If it doesn’t go in smooth as glass and ain’t perfect then I ain’t running it!! |

Same thing happened to me with the castle nut. I think a flange lock nut is acceptable. I’ve checked mine since installing and have no issues. |

Thanks so much Dick for the response!!!! I thought I was going crazy… I appreciate the update that all appears ok. I think Rare Parts did a fantastic job on the lower ball joints but not so much on the uppers after this experience… |
