Can anyone brain storm with me on what could be causing this??

Note: My prowler is supercharged ...

In the morning the engine cranks up right away on first try but when it is warm or at normal operating temperature, the engine will not start up till about 3 or 4 cranks?

At times I will crank it 3 or 4 times and then wait. Once I crank it a 5th time after resting a few seconds, my prowler will startup.

It idles smooth and it cruises good. There is no hesitation or stalling on WOT(Wide Open Throttle). This tells me the injectors are not clogged or air filter element dirty. I just cleaned my K&N filter and I did not over do it with the oil.

I was thinking maybe the fuel filter is going bad but my thoughts are I would experiance rough idle or hesitation or missing during cruising.

I also thought maybe my spark plug gapping of .35 is causing the slow startups but would not explain the quick morning startups.??

Thank you for your feedback!!

Dan - I know you already mentioned the fuel filter, but don't dismiss it because you don't have a rough idle. When I had burnt three plugs at the track in Louisiana, it was amazing how hard it still was to tell it wasa missing. Even now, with three cylinders almost powerless, the computer adapts and keeps the engine running with what is available for it to adjust and use. Check the fuel filter, if for no other reason than to absolutely rule it out.

Have you pulled a spark plug to check to see if they are burning cleanly?

Hope you isolate the problem soon.

Marty

Dan,
My car is not super charged but I had the same problem.
Took it into the dealer. Found out not to even touch the gas pedal when starting. It has worked ever since.

Dan,

Have you checked the fuel pressure? If not, do so and do a leak down test. The fuel pump may be going bad and not holding pressure. The fuel pump was going bad on my Viper and it was doing the same thing, started fine cold, ran great but was hard to start after it warmed up.

If the fuel pressure is a little low or erratic it could just be the filter. If it doesn't hold pressure when you shut it off it may be the pump.

If the pump and filter are fine, you might even try resetting you computer. Never know!

I'm not an expert but have had similar problems.

Hope you find the problem and its a cheap fix.

Howard

Might be your regulator. System is supposed to hold pressure after shut off or it will bleed down and make start ups hard or require additional cranks. I would say that after you try and start you repressure system and when you try and start again it fires right up because system is at that point repressured.

Dan..........I received an email tonight from our DC "technical source" that was reading about your problem and here is what he had to say:

"I had a hard starting problem with one of my Prowlers and found that a mechanic had not re-installed the ground wire from the engine to the frame. When the engine was hot, the radio suppression strap(the only ground path other than the ground strap) could not handle the amperage resulting in a no start or very slow crank. I don't know what Dan has done in the engine compartment but it is another thing to check."

Dan,
You could be experiencing an intermittent crank or cam sensor. We did have problems with our crank senor. One of our California owners lost a cam sensor the other day. His car would not start.

Where do you tap in to test the fuel pressure. No fittings on the rail any more. At the tank? They show fitting setup in the svc manual. where are they using it. Would like to test fuel pressure easily.

There is a connector on the top of the engine located right on the fuel rail itself
