My wife drove one wheel of our '99 in some gravel in a parking lot this week. While backing up the gravel pushed the front left mud flap under the tire, pulling the flap under the wheel and wrapping the fender around the tire. $1275 damage. Has anyone else had this kind of problem before?

I "feel" for your misfortune, but that is EXACTLY why we have said to trim the front flap about an 1 1/2" from the "factory" length.

I don't care if the flaps are a "MOPAR" item, dealers are scum and will run you around getting that $1200.00 "accident" covered under some kind of warranty, versus a "minor" stone chip that may occur because youreduced the length of the flaps. Touch up paint is cheap compared to a new fender!

Interesting the survey for this month is about flaps and he number of people that have not trimmed them. Surprised we don't hear more about "tweaked" or severely damaged fenders ... hmmmmm

Maybe we need a "recount" of the votes for this, Mike?!?

Ray, you are right that we haven't trimmed the flaps. I liked the lower look at the OE length. You can be sure that are going to be trimmed now. The amazing thing to me was how the car was completly disabled by the plastic mud flap. You know the flap didn't even come off!

Someone posted a while ago to hot glue the flaps on, what do you think about that?

I like it, I would rather lose a $14.00 flap than $1200 fender assembly.

My mud flap cracked my fender. The dealer said they would cover it this time, but I would have to trim the flap, cause they would not cover any more.

djprowler, I did the same thing on the GC trip and with nobody to blame but myself. It isn't an uncommon problem but mostly avoidable. Thou I have yet to have the replacement delivered, DC is covering it under warranty...that should be your first move. Good luck with it and keep us posted on how yours turns out. Hot glue has some merit.

Did the same thing. Fender was okay just bent brackt. Only problem is you can't buy the bracket w/o the fender. 900.00 for fender and painting, and 2700.00 for new lower curb. The curb didn't hurt because my wife wanted me to do that years ago. Still leave my mud flaps untrimmed and always will. I will never back over a curb again but hopefully we can help others who don't want to trim their mudflaps by posting this kind of thing here. With all the gravel we have on our roads here and the profile of our cars touching up the rock chips is not an option, there would just be to many.
LOL

By the way, just remove the flap and you can still drive your car while waiting on the replacement.

Just a thought about the mud flap comments.
I also backed over mine and the dealer replaced it at no charge.

I've been thinking about a way to stop this from happening without having to trim or shorten the mudflap and I feel that I may just have the solution.
Before installing your mudflap, cut a 1/8" wide slot straight up to the top of the flap (about 1 inch long) from each of the 3 mounting holes with a pair of scissors or a knife. This will enable the mudflap to pull itself loose from the mounting bolts when or if you do happen to back over it. I have not tried this yet but feel confident that it may just be the answer to the problem.

The Hot glue thing will never work. Too much vibration and the hot glue does not stick to plastic very well over a period of time.
I also doubt that Velcro will work in a long term situation because of the vibrations. My factory nuts even kept coming loose and I had to lock-tight them to keep them on.

I believe that my dealer said the fender assembly was either $720.00 or $760.00 unpainted. Installation is a snap, taking only about 15 minutes for the whole assembly.

Part numbers for the brackets, not including the fender are:
4786184AB Fender bracket - right
4786185AB Fender bracket - left
6035766 nut/rd- round special (4)
6035767 rivet/blind. bulb special (4)
Note: The rivet and 'nut' are Huck fasteners and require a special tool to
install them.

I'm not sure if they are available through the dealer network though. I'm still trying to get answers on that.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The $1275 price is the total cost to have my dealer replace fender, paint, etc. I got to use my customer care towing benefit. It doesn't look like the warrenty is going to cover this, nor do I expect it to.

If so many folks have had this problem I am surprised that DC still offers the mud flaps. they should at least give some warning when you purchase the flaps? A mud flap redesign would be in order.

Maybe it's time to re-visit this post about mud flaps before every Prowler mud flap is glued, taped, siliconed or rivited to the fenders.
Some ideas work and some don't. Use your own best judgment as to what works best for you.

Full length for me... I'd of spent more then 1200 repainting each of my cars, per car, by now, and no "flap" about it. Just be more careful!

Am I missing something?

Unless the mudflap was about a foot longer then actually touching the ground, how could it get pushed UNDER the tire? On mine, by the time it touched the ground (much less under a tire) it would have already been completely ripped off.

I could possibly see how backing up on a large obstacle might rip it off the three bolts but, I fail to see how it could get rolled over without already being completely detached.

YF, if you drive into a pot hole and THEN try to back up, the flap is pushed against the rear of the tire, pinching it between the wheel and the edge of the pothole. When the tire rotates it pulls the flap AND THE FENDER down and under. This has occurred numerous times and it not a once in a lifetime mistake. Even if you trim the mudflaps it is still extremely possible to do it. Trimming the flaps prevents them from dragging over a speed bump or hitting the edge of the pot hole before you go into the pot hole. It does not prevent pulling the flap and fender down, however. Larry Lord (I think) suggested cutting slits in the flap above the 3 bolts so that the flap could get pulled off of the fender, rather than pulling the fender down.

I POSTED A THREAD A WHILE BACK ABOUT TRIMMING THE ORIGINAL FLAPS AND HOT GLUE EXTENSIONS ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE ORIGINAL...I USED A BLACK VINYL THAT MATCHES THE COLOR OF THE ORIGINAL FLAP SO YOU CAN'T REALLY TELL IT'S AN EXTENSION....ALL TOLD MY FLAPS ARE BARELY 1/4" OFF THE GROUND..(nothing gets by them and i mean nothing).AND WITH THE SOFT VINYL IF IT CATCHES BACKING UP IT SEEMS SLIDE RATHER THAN STICK TO THE TIRE..AND IT RELEASES FROM WHATEVER YOU ARE BACKING OVER..IF NOT THE GLUE PULLS LOOSE AND THATS IT...YOU DO NEED TO CHECK THE GLUE ONCE IN A WHILE TO MAKE SURE ITS NOT COMMING LOOSE BUT THATS IT...I WAS A LITTLE DISAPOINTED IN THE RESPONSES I GOT TO MY IDEA BUT FOR $10.00 BUCKS I GOT ENOUGH VINYL TO REDO LOST EXTENSIONS 4 TIMES..WHICH I HAVENT LOST ONE YET (over 1,000 miles)..MUCH BETTER THAN $1,275.00 BUCKS!!

Art, Don't pull into a pothole and then back up. The extension has absolutely nothing to do with it. If the flap hits the back edge of the pothole and gets squeezed against the tire, you have a $ 1200 problem. The flap is not going to slip against the tire. The extension might not get trapped but the flap will. The pothole needs to be a couple of inches deep and have a sharp drop to it.

I've trimmed about an inch off the bottom and have piece of mind now. I don't have any trouble with speed bumps or gravel. I don't seem to have gotten any more stone chips even with the inch off. Maybe they don't look quite as cool as the dragger guards but,you know, they work just fine.

Hey guys, with 17" tires you must be finding pretty big chuck holes. Just curious, if you are in a chuck hole why not go forward versus backing up or maybe you need to find better parking places for those moonlite romances!! LOL, After a year haven't had any problems with the full length flap but I also TRY to steer clear of bad roads. I'm sure my time will come though. Just wanted to chime in.

Silly question but, if you know it will do damage backing up out of a pothole...then why backup?

Unless the pothole is on the rim of the Grand Canyon, I'd vote to go forward.

I have never done it. To answer the last questions: you pull into a parking lot and there is a pot hole you do not see and you cannot pull any farther forward due to concrete barrier, a telephone pole type barrier, it is dark and they are unfamiliar with the lot, don't realize the pot hole is that deep, etc. In a gravel parking lot it is quite common to have too deep potholes. People who do not read all the info on this site are still not aware of the possibility or forgot about it. Their wife was driving the car, etc. Lots of reasons. Why do people still have the stock brake pads instead of ceramic? Everyone has their own reasons and it is a free country. I am sure there are a lot more reasons for it happening.

YOU DON`T HAVE TO USE A POT HOLE. MOST OF THE OLDER HOMES HERE IN THE DENVER AREA HAVE DRIVEWAYS THAT ARE LIKE A SLANTED CURB. INSTEAD OF A NORMAL DRIVEWAY. I WAS BACKING INTO MY DRIVE WHEN THE FLAP GOT PUSHED AGAINST THE TIRE.
EVERYTHING MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. IT WOULDN`T HAVE MATTERED IF THE FLAP WAS CUT OR NOT.
THE TIRE CAUGHT IT AND THE DIRTY WORK WAS DONE.

Wish I would have read these posts sooner. I backed into my nephews driveway because I was afraid of scraping the nose and ended up pulling the right fender down 2". Seem's like the fender is ok, maybe just the brackets bent. I'm going to try to get it in under warranty also as others have managed to and I will be also searching for a solution to this problem. Has anyone come up with anything that has been feild tested and works?

JMO--The Prowler is a unique vehicle. I don't drive it on gravel roads, park it anywhere other then smooth surfaces. Its very low and you have to watch where you drive it. I drive around Potholes, curbing, (speed Bumps-45 degree angle. I don't let others drive it without me next to them because of these problems. Thats why its a hard everyday vehicle! If you trim the mudflaps its defeating the purpose somewhat. Remember its not a SUV!!!
