My fuel tank (2000) is leaking gas around the retaining ring that holds the fuel pump in. I looked up the part number on POA in the 2000 parts manual, and came up with 4581239 for the O-ring. In another post, someone mentioned they replaced the O-ring style with a Square o-ring. Does anyone know if they changed the part number, and what that would be? Thanks, Kevin |

Kevin - I don't know the part number but the piece was redesigned a few years ago. A parts department at a dealership should be aboe to get you the part #. They are not expensive - less thyan $20.00 - hardest part is getting the top ring on the fuel pump unscrewed. |

Thanks for the replies. I saw about that tool from a previous post, and have been trying to find one locally Even called Lock Technologies who makes it to see who dist's. are. No luck. To order from Eldorado Tools, due to the holiday, I wouldn't get it until next week, so I'm just going to get a strip of steel and make one. I'll head to the dealership tomorrow morning to try to get a gasket. I had called the dealer service dept. yesterday morning to see what they would charge to replace it. I figured if it was only about a hour charge, I'd let them do it. I had to explain to the service advisor that you don't have to drop the tank, I could show it to him in 30 seconds (I had the nuts off the plate already). He said he needed to talk to his tech and will call me back. (I thought they had some book that told the time it took) I still have not heard from him. That's ok, because I started worrying about the possibility of them stripping the treads putting it back to together, and the next thing I'd be having to replace is the tank, so I'd rather do it myself to know it's right. |

Do not strip the threads. The tank removal according to Chrysler is a 3.8 hour job, but takes a good tech over 10 hours to replace it. The transmission needs to be dropped along with the exhaust. I would wait for the tool to arrive. This message has been edited by Howard on 11-21-2006 at 07:02 PM |

when you get the new gasket use a little carefully placed weatherstrip adhesive to help hold the gasket in place.let it dry, then put in pump and whatever you do ,do not put large nut on crooked.it will strip the threads.you will know when its on correctly.because the nut will go on easily, until you have to use the tool to tighten it up to torgue specs.if it doesnt go on smoothly and binds right away then its crooked. ------------------ |

I went and got the O-ring, and to answer my original question, the part number is the same, 4581239, and it is the square one ($9.70 plus tax). Dealer wanted 2 hours, $180, to replace it. That's ok, I'd rather do it myself. I went to Lowes and got a piece of steel, and made a tool. Looks just like the one Howard posted, except non-adjustable. I'll be replacing it today or tomorrow. When I changed my regulator I tried the square gasket and it would not seal. I kept throwing codes and could smell gas. I replaced with the old round gasket and all is good. |

I replaced my own gasket after the dealer screwed it up. The new square design can roll up and not seal before you screw down the cap. You can replace the gasket yourself in 20 minutes....longer if the gasket keeps rolling up on you, but I used vaseline to hold the o-ring down. it worked. If you don't have the cap removal tool....tap with a hammer and flat-head...it'll move. remember to follow the steps to de-pressurize your fuel tank! saves a gas puddle under your car. The dealer ship didn't and I had a puddle of gas....then I saw someone..an employee... smoking as he walked up to the car....I yelled at him and that was the last time I would ever let a dealer touch the car. |

I used an oil filer plier. It worked great. ------------------ |
