Homemade Harmonic Balancer Installation Tool

I used i believe a 12MM bolt the same diameter as the one that holds the harmonic balancer but it was about 65mm long and welded it to a piece of 3/4 inch all thread (this diameter is not critical)about 3 inches (75mm) long. I made it too long initialy and had to shorten it to fit between the crankshaft end and the radiator. Make sure you get plenty of threads into the crankshaft so you don't strip the crankshaft threads out. I should of welded a nut on the end so I could lock up the tool but that is optional. I used two flat washers over the small end and 2 over the large end big enough to cover the end of the 3/4 inch pipe nipple. The pipe nipple does the pushing. This replaces Special Tool 6791, you can buy it here

Not very glamorous but it worked.

Tighten the harmonic balancer center bolt to 115 n.m (85 Ft lb.)

You could eliminate the welding part it you had a long enough piece of metric all thread.

I have made a lot of small specialty tools over the years for work and at home. A lot of them I only needed one time and I usually make them at work in my spare time. I didn't have long all thread or a longer 12 mm bolts so I welded the larger piece on to make it work.
