Hi guys

I have done allot of searching here on the forum for replacement speakers, one of mine is giving me a bad sound (door speaker)

Seems the consensus here is to use the Kappa 63.9i .. unfortunately I can't find them anywhere in UK, Amazone UK doesn't sell them anymore either, so wonder if they are old or anything newer exists ... so I was wondering if there are other contenders and what the difference between having a 2 way to 3 way is ?

Sorry for resurfacing YET another speaker thread

Stick with infinity they are 2 ohm and will be more efficient and will match the amp . 2 way will be less midrange considering you have 4 midrange tweeters close to your ears.

You can find the 2-way Infinity 62.9's on Ebay....Like mslc10 said, you are probably better off staying with the 2-ways anyway. Also, since you should attempt to stay with impedance matched speakers, and good choice for the dash and rears are the JBL 0328. Obviously, the Infinity 32.9's would be better, but it is all but impossible to find them anymore. I'm sure there is some old stock out there somewhere, but I haven't been able to find them.

Well, found the 62.11 on Amazon UK, ordered it, we will see how it stacks up ... would have preferred the 63.9 but no luck finding them here

those are good looking speakers!!! super efficiant at 95db!!! let us know!! also there is an issue with the small infinitys going in the rear sub box, would recommend MB quart dkc-108 or equivalent. pumpkin may chime in but the infinity requires fairly extensive modification so they fit. ive heard mb quarts are drop in....but dont hold me to that!

Carlos,

I Fitted 2 way infinity Kappa's in the doors of mine, I also had difficulty finding the right spec's for sale in the UK. Had to make a small adapter, I think I screwed the new speaker into the old mounting.

One of my back ones has just gone, I couldn't find 3.5 inch Infinity replacements in the UK without paying silly prices to import them. After research, the best dash and rear replacements I found was the JBL GX302. Its a 2 way replacement with 2ohm impedance. Available on e-bay, just enter JBL GX302.

Ordered for front and rear, they should arrive any day now and I will let you know the outcome.

Nick

FWIW, the OEM speakers can be repaired. If they sound crackly, it's because the paper cone has torn away from it's attachment to the metal speaker frame. I fixed mine by spreading some RTV silicone over the tear using a popsicle stick. I wound up putting those speakers in my Dakota 7 or 8 years ago and they sounded great right up until I sold it earlier this year.

Fitted the JBL GX302's to the front and rear this weekend.

The fronts fit into the dash perfectly. The factory wiring has a connector that is the wrong orientation and is not quite long enough to reach the JBL connectors. Easiest way is to male up a short lead with 2 large male spade crimp connectors that will plug into the factory connector and at the other end use a large and small female crimp connector to connect to the speaker. Screws straight in. If you want to hide them to prevent windscreen reflection then rip off the old grille mesh material from the old speaker and tape it to the underside of the dash around the edges.

The rears are a really tight fit due to having larger magnets than stock. You have to bend the crimp connectors up flush with the cone to get them to fit down into the tub and they stick up about 10mm too high. They are solder connections so cut off the old, crimp on new spade connectors and the factory wiring has plenty of length. I made two spacers 10mm long from small plastic pipe, feed the factory screw through it and the speakers sit 10mm higher than stock. This still leaves loads of room from the rear grille mesh. They become a little more visible than stock however they look nice with the chrome/orange tweeter.

They sound a lot better than stock, although the rear cone has ripped all the way round and one front was half way round so no wonder the sound was poor, I was only really working my door speakers. The power from the 2 ohm JBL's combined with the door Kappas and my good sub means I would never have the need for more power, when turned up it is the car trim that is the limit not the stereo, everything seems to start shaking to bits!

Overall very pleased, the rears were more fiddly to fit than I thought but worth it. Robin's link above has the JBL's available in the USA and they get full 5* rating from the review. Seem a good speaker as couldn't find 3.5 inch infinity's in the UK and the JBL's are a bargain price at around £45 per pair. Cheers. Nick.

What's the easiest way to remove the rear shelf to get to the speakers? My sound system sounds as though the speakers are off, especially in the base department. I can see me being relinquished of a hundred pounds very soon!...

Remove fasteners - there are five in back, four in front of cover and two on top. There probably is a special tool for removing the fasteners, but I found that a fork works great. It can take a bit of elbow grease for the fasteners to pop out, but did not break any.

Thanks Norm for the removal tips.

The center speaker I am assuming is the base. As anyone installed a larger one and will the stock radio accept it?

I am not one for a high powered stereo system but the stock system is way below par. Definitely on the winter to do list.

Doc, if the pictures load this is what my worst front and rear looked like, so no wonder the sound was weak. You can also see how much bigger the magnet is, along with 2.3 ohm impedance it delivers a lot more power. Give your speakers a go first, you may have the same problems I had.
