I change my timing belt water pump and hoses today.
Nothing really glaring.
62 thousand .
Belt was shiny and smooth could tell there was wear the grooves were lower and black powder around housing.
Water pump had a leak at the bottom.
Glad I decided to do it. The risk of it slipping was greater than breakage.

If a car that is not driven much and has a leak in the water pump .
That spot on the pump would be constantly getting a drip on it .
JMO I think would cause a week spot.
Job was fairly ease .
Any questions .i have pictures of the belt pump and other parts.

I have reached out to RPL.
He has decided that he no longer wants to continue with the study.
I'm sure he will chime in ....
Thanks .

62 thousand miles or kilometers? I ask because you are located in Canada, and your in the metric system there. Was there any wear on the inside drive lugs of the belt itself? Any cracks or splits on the belt outside or inside? And, if I understand you correctly, when the water pump leaks, it will leak onto the belt? Would like to see photos if possible.....thank you!

Hi quincy. I have a USA prowler with 62 thousand miles on it.
Yes there was wear on the inside lugs. I will Post a Picture of my belt in a minute.
Here are the other pictures of the water pump leaking and where the anti freeze drops. Remember this is a closed environment.
beginning rad hose removed

first leaking pump..

second belt on where drip would go

third where drip goes with belt off.

fourth water pump out

There was black powder inside casing....enough to show wear....

Belt pictures..

first two of old belt .belt felt hard and plastic.
(round groves part)were worn down compared to new belt. New belt felt rubbery and flexible.

hardest part lining up new belt with the three marks.

Thanks robin. Great photos. We appreciate the post and information. Was the R&R a plan all along, or did you see coolant on the floor which prompted the change out?

Just had a gut feeling last time this was posted in a thread.
I was on the side of leave it alone till 80 to 100.000.
Then I researched it and thought for the cost and time if I do it myself at end of season no problem... Better safe then sorry....
There was no sign of coolant leak...
If anyone has the time and cost is minimal..
130 for kit from rock auto.

Thanks for posting Robin, you convinced me to do mine. Kat is now 17 years old with 16k, cheap piece of mind to not have to worry about it.

Second last one from bottom. should be about 120 US
You don't need the one with the seals in it.
They wanted 500 from my local parts store.
But by all means go with someone you trust. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=1374678&parttype=5759&ck[ID]=0&ck[idlist]=0&ck[viewcurrency]=CAD&ck[PHP_SESSION_ID]=rhs0lejqm2p3dmq00a7bdqhvd6

Thanks for the follow up robin. We appreciate the detail. Something to consider seriously. I'm at 23k miles but at 16 years old going on 17 one wonders.......

Not sure I'm up to the R&R my self anymore. I'll look over the site for instructions from others posted in the past.

Take Care!

If you have ever changed a timing belt before I would rate the Prowler one of the easier ones to do. It makes it easier if you have the correct 3 jaw puller to remove the harmonic dampener and the tool to reinstall it.

On the other hand Catfish didn't recommend doing it yourself.

Old catfish was a smart cookie and good mechanic. Another thing to consider.....buy the kit and have someone else R&R the belt and hoses.

It is an easy job, Like Padroo says, you have to have the correct puller to get the harmonic balancer off. After you install the new belt & release the hydraulic tensioner, ALWAYS ROTATE THE ENGINE BY HAND SEVERAL TIMES TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THEM RIGHT ON THE TIMING MARKS, This is a NO error area. Always buy the kit which includes the pulley & new tensioner & water pump. It will save you a lot of head aches in the future. After 16 or 17 years, They are due regardless of miles. Also Harbor Tools sells the correct puller. It is a cheap puller from China, but it works.

If I remember I bought the OTC Puller which is a brand name for $32 from Amazon back in 2011.

Did you have the installer to start the harmonic balancer?
I thought it was strange that there was no key in the balancer.

Also change the thermostat and top & bottom hoses. I just put on the hose kit I had bought from (BOB) RPL a few years ago. I figured they lasted this long, now was the time. But all the timing is done by the Timing Belt & computer anyway, so the balancer doesn't need a key

I didn't mean for timing purposes, I meant to keep it from turning on the end of the crankshaft.
Has anyone ever lost a harmonic balancer? I lost one a Plymouth Acclaim V6 once.
