Buying tires that have dates on them you know how old they are but I wonder how long these timing belts have been sitting on a shelf somewhere even though they are new the clock is ticking with age. Just a thought.

Just like hoses, I think use/abuse is more of an issue that age alone. Until installed you are probably good.

I have a 2004 Hyundai with 15,000 miles on it and in the near future I will be concerned about all the rubber parts.

Got it done . Old belt still flexible but.....
[img][/img]

Not sure it's original. Called previous owner he did not have it done . But a " Gates" belt as oem? Water pump had pentastar on it , pulley said USA & fc68768.3, INA,ETI on it.

Who knows? Well I know it's all new now.

Hey all - having a number of items done on my 99, including timing belt, water pump, thermostat, belts and hoses, etc. Phil, are you still doing a study on the belts? If so, I would be happy to send it to you for testing, just let me know and PM me your information.

Got my car back after timing belt and water pump were replaced, along with a number of other things. Timing belt photos below. The belt doesn't appear to have suffered from the amount of time it's been in the car, but can't speak to how rounded the teeth are compared to new.

Interesting comment from the mechanic; he said the timing set up by the factory was off by 3 teeth.

I also had all of the hoses replaced, one of which had been installed with the clamp right up on the edge of the hose, too close for comfort.

While I have no way of knowing if the timing belt replacement was truly necessary with less than 8500 miles on the engine, at least it's no longer going to be on my mind, wondering if today is the day it breaks and I'm overhauling an engine.

Best news of all, the work they did somehow eliminated that vibrating noise I've had for the 3 years I have owned the car (sounded like a heat shield vibrating against the engine, but wasn't). No idea what it was though.

Glad every thing went well.
Sure takes a load off the mind.

I had one of those black rubber bungee cords in my shed never used.
The kind you see on the road all over.
I hooked my rear bagger from the push mower on it. It's not heavy .
When I came back 1 hour later the bagger was on the ground and the bungee was in two pieces. I picked up the half on the floor and I was shocked that I could just pull it apart with out much effort.

Rubber is like plastic its composition changes with time.
What ever price you paid ......its well worth the piece of mind.

Is there any way possible you can find out from your mechanic what that was ? I have something similar in my Prowler and thought that was just the way they sounded. I thought 'how odd, but maybe, just maybe that's how it is supposed to be'.

The noise you describe I have found to be the rubber sleeve in one of the front exhaust pipe hangers has slide out of place letting the hanger rod vibrate in the metal hanger sleeve. Check it out on your car.

Interesting comment from the mechanic; he said the timing set up by the factory was off by 3 teeth.

That would make that engine over 20 degrees retarder or advanced and I doubt very much that it would even run well enough to drive

The mechanic that said it was off three teeth has to be pulling your leg as that would throw the timing off more than 20 degrees. It would not run very well if it were that far off, or even run at all
