Tapers are same on both units.

Rare Parts unit as an "Under Cut" added to it.

Dark areas on studs are where ball joint meets knuckle.

He might be talking about where the stud goes into the ball.

I don't know about that. I THOUGHT it was the UPPER front since they weren't available as a separate piece, you had to buy the upper A arm to get the ball joint. Again, I am not sure, I missed your question until just now and didn't research it.

Here is a link from a prior discussion a little over a year ago. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/025172.html

RP13874A should be a good number for the Rare Parts Upper Ball Joint.

Here is the most recent contact information I have for them.

Upper ball joint and lower ball joint. What's the difference???? Let me tell you my opinion. The weight of the car, rests on the top (or ball) of the UPPER ball joint. The LOWER ball joint has the weight of the car pulling DOWN on the ball joint, trying to pull the ball out of the socket. This is why the LBJ is so important. Most cars, have the LBJ mounted upside down (or same as the upper ball joint) and this keeps both balls in their sockets and why you can run a bad one for a long time before it comes apart. Ask the engineers why they did it this way, I'm sure there is a good reason.
