I am sure this has been asked before but a quick search didn't help. I have a 2001 and I have the starter motor unbolted. How/where should I be aiming to get the starter motor out. Does it come out the bottoms which I have had little luck doing or somehow out the top? Do I need to remove additional parts? Any help will be appreciated |

It will come out the bottom without removing anything else. BUTTTTT, and that is a BIG but, it is a pain in the butt to get it out, and then back in. It can be done but I couldn't get it to go. My son who is in his early 50s seem to be more agile than me and did it for me, finally. I got it out but wasn't even close to getting it back in. Good luck. |

So at the moment it's like the lockness monster. People say it's there but no picture nor video proof. Lol |

I changed my starter last year and it is a super tight fit after spending what seemed like all day I walked away , came back the next day with the gear end pointing down and a few turns of the starter it finally came out. Just take your time and it will come out from below the car .good luck . And mine was for nothing it was the ignition switch that was bad not the starter |

While not required, loosening up the exhaust manifold to lead pipe clamp will buy you a little more wiggle room. It does come out, been there, done that. |

Actually that little bit is helpful. So straight down with the starter gear down going between the exhaust and the frame. I was looking around and thinking maybe coming out near the oil pan was possible maybe if I closed my eyes enough and wished. Was also giving thought to removing oil filter and the sending unit and trying that way. So at least now I have a getting warmer direction. |

Check the nose on the replacement. I sent 2 back because while it said for Prowler the bolt holes were in wrong places. Wound up having old starter checked over all ok so i had solenoid replaced . Then broke old one open and found contacts burnt up inside. Starter will come out and go back without taking anything else loose. Just a pain. Still works years later. |

I have done a lot of wrenching and for what the starter is, that was near the top of the pita meter. Had to remove the positive stud on the top and use newtons second law on the exhaust to gain a fraction of space. Mine came out when I was apple to find space to do a flip and coming out back side first. |

After a few hours of struggling and swearing i finally undid the three 15 mill and one 18 mill bolts i jacked up the motor a couple inches and removed the engine mount, sooooo much easier. |

Had to replace my starter today and it was a pain and a hell of a time Bad contacts in side close fit but got it got it out removed the wires got it back in coud not get the wires on so got it out and made some longer wires atached them then back in now good to go . But No fun hardest starter I have ever changed to remove and replace .. only good thing was it was a new OEM and not rebuilt .. They make a repair kit I think I will repair the old one and keep it on hand .hope not to ever change it any more ... |
