Does the dash have to be torn apart to remove the Prowler tachometer?

No. I replaced my Tach without disassembling the dash. If I recall correctly there is an access panel underneath the steering column where you can unplug the tach. I’m not sure how the post that the tach bracket is secured. If you’re leaving the tach completely off the post just sitting there would look ugly.

Thanks Rich, it was nice seeing you again in Gatlinburg.

I found out that I am bad at backing up the Prowler. Everywhere we went you had to back into a parking spot. I avoid backing when possible. I don't use the tach so my idea is to remove the tach and install a 7 inch monitor in it's place and use it for a backup and maybe a front camera. I can use the tach mount to mount the monitor. I have had backup cameras in both of my Prius cars and really miss them when I drive the Prowler. Just something I am kicking around when the weather turns bad up north. Years ago we went to the Colorado event, and I mounted a camera on the trailer hitch and it is still there. I powered it with the power going to the rear window defroster, so I didn't have to cut any wires. When I wanted to check my trailer all I had to do was hit the button for the rear defroster and it ran the monitor I never found a good place for it till now.

For what it's worth, I installed a wi-fi backup camera in my Prowler. It takes a minute to get the camera view on my iPhone as I have to select the camera's wi-fi signal in settings and then open the app to get the view on my phone. That option seemed to be the least intrusive options to be able to get a rear view.

Good luck to you!

From the service manual:
1. Open Hood
2. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
3. Remove two torx head screws. One to each side of the tachometer mounting bracket.
4. Unplug the tachometer wiring connector
5. Remove the tachometer from the vehicle.

Thanks everyone for the information. Does the bracket separate from the Tach? I am hoping that it does so I can use it as part of my mount for the monitor I will be installing.

It does. There are screws to the left and right that will unbolt the tach from the base.

Thanks Steve, I loosened the two screws and I see the tach slides out of the mounting bracket. I haven't decided if I will do just a backup camera and monitor or use a small tablet and mount a front and rear camera and then I could use it like a head unit from modern radios. I could install an OBD II reader and show a tach, water temperature, voltage or whatever other imformation it can read from the cars computer.

I finally found what I was looking for. It is the ATOTO P8, it has a high quality QLED screen with a matt finish so it doesn't glare. This below is from the Amazon website. The model I bought comes with two cameras, a backup camera and a windshield mounted one. I have an Android phone so it comes with Android Auto installed. If you have an iphone it will work with that also. Newer Android phones come with Android Auto but you have to go into the app settings to find it. Any app you have on your phone that is compatible with Android Auto shows up on the 7 inch screen. It lets you play your music, in my case Spotify over one of the FM frequencies or if you have the input which the Prowler doesn't you can play it through the radio for improved sound. It's nice to have a larger screen for Google maps in front of you. It comes with a windshield/dash mount but it's a Prowler, not much windshield.
There are a ton of reviews on YouTube.

ATOTO P8 Portable Wireless Android Auto 7inch Car Stereo, Wireless CarPlay, with 1080P Dual Recording Cameras, Remote Control, WDR & Auto Dimmer, Fast Charge, Support Up to 128G SD, P807PR

Here are a few pictures I took while making the custom mount that attaches the ATOTO P8 to the tach ring. I used a piece of black ½ inch HDPE plastic and cut it down to the same diameter as the tach which was 68 mm. It is a tight area behind the steering wheel but it fit.

Next I will install the cameras. I wish they had a way to shorten up the cables. By the way, you can turn the cameras on any time and record if you want. I wanted a front camera in the grill not in the windshield.

Good idea. Location will be better to see while driving. I have a 7 in Android stereo, but the location is too low to look at the map while driving. I just use my phone to display my maps now and placed it below the speedometer, on top of the bezel. The only question I have is how you plan on connecting it to your stereo? Aux Out or FM? I did use an FM transmitter before, but the sound was not so good. I have several Android stereos and have been experimenting with them. I have 1 ATOTO unit and they make better products than most of the ones sold on Amazon.

My ATOTO P8 gives you the option to use one of the FM frequencies or there is a cable supplied that you can plug it into an auxiliary input which the Prowler does not have. It also has two small speakers on the unit which are OK for voice but not so much for music.

Playing around with the unit I was able to add YouTube as one of the apps. The app mirrors what is playing on your android phone. For someone who spends a lot of time in their car while not driving. May be a better option for other cars or trucks.

Does anyone know the PIN-OUT of the DIN connector from the CD Player to the radio? I can't seem to find this kind of information in the wiring diagram in the manual.

Dale,
2001 Service Manual, the Audio section page 8A-7 and 8A-8.
Fig. 4 shows the connector and page 8 has the pin data.

Hope this helps.

Since I wear hearing aids I use my phone for GPS guidance. I hear the verbal directions in my hearing aids. I don’t need to look at the screen very much. As to the back up and front camera I am looking at a setup that replaces the rear view mirror. But it’s pretty pricey so I haven’t looked into it seriously yet. I want to get a dash cam for our daily driver first. It already has a back up camera with the overhead view showing everything around the car.

Rich, I wear hearing aids too and they work well with all the Bluetooth devices I own. I listen to TV with Bluetooth.
I think every job I ever had was in a noisy environment.

I finally got around to installing the rear camera the other day. Running the wire from the trunk into the dash wasn't as bad as I thought. I haven't connected the reverse wire that makes the camera come on when the car is put into reverse. I am having trouble finding the violet/black wire that goes to the back-up lights. I need to just try a little harder, I guess. The way the ATOTO is set up you can turn the front and rear camera on and off from the touch screen and record one or both cameras. I hope to install the front camera in the windshield today.
I finally got around to installing the front camera in front of the rear view mirror and it works well. I made an effort to connect the reverse wire to the back up lights but failed again. I will have to wait until I can get the car up in the air again.

By the way, the front and rear camera can be controlled by the touch screen. You can use both or just one camera and record when you want. I still haven't used it; spring is just around the corner.
