Just an update - the Gatlinburg Tourism Dept. emailed me and said cheapest rates would be for week after Memorial Day or week before Labor Day. I realize a lot of people (including us) have standing plans on Holiday weekends, so
I have messaged back and asked that they show usn the rates but alsopick at least one other week between the beginning of May and end of September and get us rates for that also.

Also - Rich's brought up soem good ideas for the area and now that Ed has resurfaced, we find out he was scouting cruising routes for us - thanks to both.

I haven't been able to attend an event,---yet. But am hoping to in 2003. Gatlinburg sounds really nice, but, a mid week event? Think about us poor working souls that need a weekend tied into the events. Some of us only have limited vacation time, and can't get a full week off.
Give it some consideration, please.

OOPS - there I go again, using Rebecca's screen name again. Our computer must have POA cookie with her name now. Sorry

Kelley - that's what we need; input from everyone. If Gatlinburg remains the choice it will almost HAVE TO remain a weekday event due to traffic and hotel rates. However please consider that it should only add a day more to your time away since even from Arkansas you will need one day to get there and one day to return. If the event is a four day affair with the events starting the first evening, your gone six days, two on a weekend. If two of the event days were on a weekend and you traveled on Thursday to get there and Monday to return, you would still be gone five days.

Nothing is set in stone yet, not dates - anything. Just hope everyone continues to post their thoughts.

Okay guys and gals, I am alive and back on line!!!
We went to Gatlinburg, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge the week after Colo. The traffic in town is a mess but we can stay outside of town and get to an awesome drive with very few problems. There are almost 100 hotels in that strip and we should be able to find something that is suitable. We stopped in about 10 hotels and got rates, etc.
It would be almost impossible to get 60 Prowlers out of a parking lot and onto the street if we stay on the main drag. The town of Townsend is 19 miles out of Pigeon Forge and has a couple of large hotel complexes that would work.
The Foothills Parkway (on the west side, not the east side) since there are two Foothills parkways, and on to THE DRAGON which has 138 curves in 11 miles and then on to the Cherehalla Skyway and the Bald River Falls is awesome. That drive alone is worth the trip. There is an excellent restaraunt near the end of the trip.
Let's concentrate on when we want to have the event. Everything else can be worked out. Do we want it late May, early June, July 4th or early Sept. ? Do we want it to just be a three day week-end or from Wed until Monday. What is everyone's thoughts?
Please post and be specific, we really do want your input. It is very hot in July and August, with lots of humidity.

VaCatDude, I did a little bit of all of that, which is subject to change, of course. I have the names and numbers of some of the hotels and the names of group sales leaders. Whoever is in charge will get the info from me. I am not looking to be in charge but I will definitely help. Laddie was in charge and so I think we owe him the right to make the decisions.
Gary, have you driven Deal's Gap (the Dragon)? or Cherohala Skyway? Cardin's Landing is a great place to eat, just past Bald River Falls.

Ed:
Kelly is the one familiar with that area, being a outside sales person, she's been all over! Next nice weekend we will make a cruise down that way and check it out. Can you e-mail me some route numbers?
Looks like there's enough interest in this to do some further investigation.

Doesn't matter to me who plans whta. The important thing is it appears we have enough people willing to help to make this event happen. I should here back next week form the Tourism Dept about hotel rates in Gatlinburg. Meantime I have the names of several other hotels outside gatlinburg and will try to find out available dates/rates.

I would like to suggest that we nail down a date for the majority of people who are willing to help plan to possibly meet there. I know Gary/Kelly live near there, Steve travels there about once a month, and Laddie has posted about making a trip to the area. When would work for most people?

I realize it will be tough for evrfyone to make it, but there will plenty of planning even for those that can't make it.

I canmake it most anytime I am not out of town on business. My next trip is July 23 - August 12, other than that - anytime.

I updated my previous post and listed:
Gary Archer as Overall Event Coordinator.
Marty Usher as Hotel Liaison.
Damon Cyr (me) as Information Manager.
Mike Venezia as Communications and Traffic Manager.

We can have more than one person helping in the various areas. If these assignments are not right, let me know. If you want to volunteer as the lead on a particular role, let me know and I'll add you to the list. We still need someone to assume the lead on "Publications - responsible for printing material, badges, putting together welcome packages" and "Meal Coordinator - responsible for researching locations and restaurants or caterers to arrange for the meals.

Assigning roles in this way will help reduce duplication of effort and will also make it clear to others who needs what information.

Marty, Sevierville Chamber of Commerce, Ex. Dir. is Brenda McCroskey, 1 888 sevierville. The Wingate Inn at 1 800 243-0560 looks to be the only place in Sevierville that would work. Pigeon Forge has a lot more hotels and if we are going mid week and not the week-end, that will work great. The best place looks to be the Music Road Hotel 1 800 429 7700.
Everyone please keep in mind, Laddie is running the show. I am sure he wants plenty of help, but he has been on this for well over a year.

Ed.

We have lots of good input & help being offered... Keep it up... I'd prefer to have someone local as the main focal point...

I'll do whatever I can to support that person & work with them & the group... Right now the date is key so we can select hotel & block a set of rooms...

I'm excited already!!!

As far a coordinator, Kelly is the one, she travels by there twice a week. With Laddie, Marty and everyone else's help, she is more than happy to handle this.

3rd week in August sound's good to me, we can celebrate my birthday as well !!

I have a proposal...

I suggest that we use the POA chat room to have on-line meetings. We have the chat room. Let's take advantage of it. With your folks help, I am willing to schedule these meetings and set up agendas. We could perhaps arrange for one meeting per month - or as we thought we needed one.

Any thoughts? Do you like this idea?

Damon I think usine the chat room will be excellent. A visit on-site first for as many as could make it would be helpful.

Gary - what weekend does NASCAR run at Bristol again - end of August?? Maybe we could meet there prior and go to race assuming tickets can be had?

Once we absolutely settle on date I will work on hotel arrangements. I will be looking for full serice hotel with restaurant and lounge so this will probably rule out Pigion Forge since it is a "dry" area. But there are a lot of properties in the area.

I am glad to see we have a lot of help. It will make it easier on everyone.

Happy Prowling

Marty

Hello every one,

The 2003 event seem to be in Gettysburg, if I have a chance I will try to be there, I missed this year event because I have engine problem with my KAT and did not have enough time to prepare, one of my former co worker attended the event but I did not see his name on POA member list, if I see him I may ask him to join the POA.

On 2004 event: Have you consider Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and The Grand Teton National Park? You can see all three in four days. There are not too much traffic in late May and early June. These place are butiful.

I am just a rookie if anyone didn't like my suggestion please accept my apology.
