Attention, Everyone involved in the planning of this event. I was just looking thru the new MEMBERS (what else would I be doing at 4:30 AM) and saw there is a new member from Sevierville, TN. I sent him an email asking if he is willing to get involved or at least help us with a little local knowledge. I guess he is in bed since he did not answer and it has been a good ten minutes. lol. Hopefully he will be our local contact that we have been looking for. I will keep you all posted about any developments. By the way, there are 76 new members since August 1. Tell me this site isn't still in its infancy!

Ed - I hope you enjoyed the scenery in Townsend, because unless we cruise THROUGH there, you won't see it next year at the POA event. Sorry Ed - the area is really a little too remote from many other things and would add a lot of drive time to most cruises. The facility looks promising from the road but has no central lobby or sizeable public space for gatherings and is showing its age.

Rebecca & I spent the day cruising the East Tennessee countryside with Gary & Kelly Archer. We certainly do NOT want to schedule the event on a weekend. We never even made it to Gatlinburg the traffic was so bad. Weekdays are the only way to go.

We think we found a hotel(s) to accommodate our needs for next year. I will be calling the owner/general manager on Monday to discuss rates/dates. They have hosted car show groups in the past. The hotel is nearly new and they are building a sister hotel accros the street. The hotel is located on a small river and has a deck overlooking the stream.

When we return home Sunday evening we will email others helping with the planning.

The surrounding area is going to give us some great cruising opportunities. We even spotted a Muscle Car Museum with 99 vintage muscle cars.

The drive to the Biltmore Estate will probably be an all day event since drive time is about two hours one way.

Everybody start getting ready - hopefully we will nail down a contract with hotel in terms of dates/rates with in a week!!

Marty

Marty, did you drive the western Foothills Pkway, Deal's Gap and Cherohala Skyway? That is the best drive down there, with very little traffic. That was the MAIN reason I told you to check out the area west of Pigeon Forge. Townsend is about 6 miles from where we would want to start. You can also take the back road into the park and down into the end of Gatlinburg, without traffic. I don't own stock in Best Western and I did not check it out. If it is not suitable, that makes all of it a moot point. We did not go inside the hotel. We drove past it and later thought it might work out.
The Music Road Hotel is on a sidestreet and we could escape town that way.
Is the Biltmore Estate two hours by Expressway, or back roads?
The traffic in Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is a big mess even on weekdays in the summer. I think it would be impossible to get a large number of cars out of a lot, even blocking traffic.

On the drive there I was hoping the Townsend location would work, but in our opinion it wouldn't be the best choice. As you mentioned the area is close to some great cruising areas. I have driven a couple of the routes you mentioned in the past and agree these should be included in our cruise schedule. To be honest, other than a lunch break, it took all day Saturday just to look at hotels so we did not plan any cruises.

Sometime great minds think alike. The Music Road Hotel is one we saw in a brochure and is the one we hope to use. The side street location as you said is a plus and the parking lot is suitable for our needs including space for those that trailer their cars. It is located in Pigeon Forge but at least away form the worst traffic in Gatlinburg. We totally ruled out hotels in Gatlinburg because of traffic and will have to find staging areas for some cruises once we get away from the hotel because we WILL not all be able to stay together at first.

Our initial idea for the Biltmore cruise is to take I 40 which is scenic drive (for an interstate)through the mountains on the way there for time considerations and take two lane roads back.

All this is merely our ideas that we will be sharing with the other event planners by email this evening or Monday when we get home and have contacted the hotel. If you really think we should stick with staying in Townsend, then by all means I would encourage you to bring that up to the planning group.

Marty, I am not pushing staying up in Townsend. We did not know the hotel situation up there. I was hoping the Best Wesstern would work. If there is no meeting room, etc. it obviously is not suitable.
The Music Road hotel is on that small road but if you go further up that road you can cut across a back road and avoid all the traffic and get out of the town reasonably quick. That is the hotel they use for the '55, '56 & '57 Chevy show. Shades of the Past (their biggest car show) is at the end of that road, on a farm.

Hey Laddie - you weren't fast enough on making your reservation. I got one of the limited # of Riverview rooms with a kingsize bed and Jacuzzie in room (not a whirlpool tub in the bathroom). Not bad for $69.00 a night.

Reservations can be now NOW!

Of course, you will probably want a parking lot view so you can look at all the KATS!

I made reservations today for Sunday through Thursday. Major problems with reservation clerk. According to her we are supposed to be there over Labor Day and some of you have reservations for Labor Day weekend at the higher rate? This woman was really confused, I hope she got it right. Anyway, Brenda and I will be there.

Great, Dave be nice to see you and Brenda again.
Also, there will be space for car trailers at the hotel.

Dave - I called hotel and they will talk with front desk/reservations. There is a multi hotel show called Shaeds of teh Past there every year at this time and they probably got confused and thought you were talking about rooms for that event next year.
