Group Train Excursion on Tuesday October 28, 2014 from Etowah, TN “THE HIWASSEE LOOP”

The trip we will be taking is the Hiwassee Loop. You can read about it here: http://www.tvrail.com/pages/Hiwassee-Loop/ and you can buy your tickets from that page. Make sure to put “PROWLER GROUP” in comments section. At this time of the year the foliage will be brilliant. You must reserve and pay for your seats NOW! It will sell out quickly. According to TVRail, the seats will go fast as this is the most popular trip and the trip will be sold out the earliest. Don’t hesitate or you may not be able to ride!

The Date: October 28, 2014

Train Leaves Etowah at: 1:30 PM

The Fare is: $45.00 per adult

The trip is: 3 1/2 hrs. and returns at 5 PM

The driving time to Etowah, TN is: 1 hr. and 45 minutes from the hotel and should be the same back to the hotel depending on traffic.

We will be leaving the Hotel around 9:30 AM. That should give everyone enough time to browse Etowah and/ or get lunch

Trip mileage is 72 miles one way (MapQuest) so one tank of gas should be sufficient. Gas up before trip.

You can buy tickets online at: https://www.dynamicticketsolutions.com/tvrail/index.cfm?template_ID=6 Go to this page and then change the calendar to October and then click on the 28th. Pay for the ticket and make sure to put “PROWLER GROUP” in the comments section!

For your GPS:

Shuttle Boarding Area Etowah Station
727 Tennessee Ave SOUTH
Etowah, TN 37331

When we get to the Etowah Station, we will board a shuttle bus for a very short couple of minutes ride to the train. That said we will need to be there about 45 minutes earlier than the leaving time. Since the hotel has a free breakfast each morning the group can take advantage of that. We may have a place for lunch on the way. Timing is everything so we’ll see how it works out. That will be discussed at the Hotel before departure.

The train will allow small coolers for snacks and drinks. They do have some for sale onboard. Parking is on the street (main drag) and at lots around the depot. Everyone will not be able to park at the same location, but they (the lots) are all close by.

We are going down to Pigeon Forge on Wed of this week to check out a few things.
If there is something you want us to consider, please post it and I will check it out. We will make the drive to the train station to see how long it takes, realistically.
I won't bother checking out the Biltmore this week, or driving the Dragon, (except maybe just for the fun of it).

Let me know if you have something in mind.
Thanks for any input.

We checked out the train station. It takes about 2 hours to get there but we found some back roads that are really scenic and the folks at the train station couldn't have been nicer. The parking lot is right there. There are two other lots VERY close by, maybe 100 yards away.
We are stuck on 54 folks signed up, which probably equates to about 100 total. I know some of the locals are planning on attending but haven't reserved a room yet. There is still plenty of time and I am not concerned about the final number.
I am going to post the "probable" schedule for the week on the beginning of this thread.

Here is the preliminary schedule. Subject to change.

Sunday evening. Checking in and getting to meet some new friends and a whole bunch of old friends. Please bring your name tags from a past event. Things are still up in the air about what we are doing that evening.

Monday - Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway and the Bald River Waterfall. We will attempt to get a group shot enroute, at an overlook on the Foothills Parkway. The same spot as last time. There will be some first time attendees so it will be new to them. If the weather is bad we will attempt to get the picture on Tuesday, at the same spot.

Tuesday - The Great Train Ride. The route starts out exactly the same way as the route to the Tail. At the bottom of the hill we will turn right on Rt. 129 instead of left, toward the Dragon. There are several more turns, Left on Rt 79, Left on 411 for about 2 or 3 miles and Left on Rt 360. The reason for all the left turns is a river and/or lake with no way to cross it. That takes us to Tellico Plains, right turn with a left after a couple of blocks onto Rt 39 and then Left on 310 into town. The station is about 2 blocks on the Left. It will take 2 hours to get there, maybe a little longer with over 50 cars. Very scenic, very little traffic since we are avoiding Maryville and a couple of difficult Left turns there.

Wed - Probably the day to go to Ashville and the Mansion.
We can take the Gatlinburg By-Pass and drive through the park almost into Cherokee, then get on the Blue Ridge Parkway for 87 miles. Again, a spectacular drive.

Thurs - Maybe an open day in case we get rained out on Monday and the Tail or in case some want to run it again.
There are tons of things to do within a couple of miles of the hotel so no one will be bored, I am sure.
That evening we will have the banquet and the Halloween costume party. Last time the costumes were incredible, to say the least. Plan on bringing a good costume, you won't regret it.

Friday it will all be over and we head for home.

I am not sure yet. I need to look at how many are planning on attending and how much we save per person. I know it will also save a little time at the gate.
MDProwler suggested some "inside" tours and I don't know if they are priced separately or how that works exactly.
