I'm sorry... I thought everyone knew what Billet Aluminum was, but having received "many" phone calls regarding the Billet Center Caps and the $$$ cost, I realized that everyone does not understand the term "Billet" with regards to Hot Rod parts. Shown here is a piece of Billet Aluminum stock... "solid" aluminum that has been cold rolled (forged, not cast) into stock. This process makes a strong, tight grained material very suitable and preferred for machining Hot Rod and Aircraft parts. As you can see the stock before machining is solid and with these Billet Center Caps, there is a tremendous amount of material waste due to the hollow design. This wasted material and the time used to removed it all add to the $$$ cost of the Billet Center Caps. Also, the type of Aluminum affects the price. We are using 6061 T6 Aircraft Grade stock to insure the best possible product. This tight grain is easier to polish and maintain too. The piece of stock shown above weighs 7.5 lbs which will produce only 4 Billet Center Caps... lots of waste. Sorry for not explaining more clearly why these Billet Center Caps cost $499 per set. Any questions, please give me a call @ 800 669 3540. THANKS, Jay |

Jay, Why did you have to go and say all that? Now I'll need to install a burglar alarm in my garage. Not to mention I'll need to keep my Prowler within eye sight when outside her garage. Terry |

Ed - I do belive that henway and jetway are somehow related and similiar. But don't hold be to it. However Fixumm could be on to something with his gun theory for billet ... the discussion continues! |

Jay! Great explanation! Thanks The amount of waste material is incredible! If I figured it out correctly it is somewhere around 5 3/4 pounds of waste for each set of 4 caps Is there any way to recycle this material so it can be used again? ------------------ |

Recycling pays BIG $$$... I just spoke to the machine shop owner and he pays $34.60 per pound for the 6061 T6 Aluminum stock that is shown above. The recycling company is always glad to pickup any scraps for $ .30 per pound. This ain't rocket science... Billet Accessories cost BIG $$$ be it for a Prowler or any other Hot Rod. The cost of materials + machine time + labor quickly add up. Later I will post some pictures of what can go wrong with the machining process which quickly increases the amount of scrap ($ .30 per pound) that is produced. THANKS, Jay |

Machine concerns... WASTE & SCRAP... As you will note, this Billet Center Cap is only worth $ .30 per pound as scrap and it weighs far less than 1 pound. So far, I am lucky as I only have 6 caps in various stages of disappointment. Any bids? THANKS, Jay This message has been edited by YELLER CAT on 06-19-2003 at 04:12 PM |
